PLP: “Unwavering And Unreserved Support”

May 17, 2015

The PLP gives their “unwavering and unreserved support” to Marc Bean in the “wake of the undemocratic and borderline dictatorial activities” in the House of Assembly, PLP Chairman Maynard Dill said this evening.

Censure Motion Passes

On March 16th, OBA MP Mark Pettingill gave notice of a motion which “condemns and expressed disgust at the words and actions” of the Opposition Leader Marc Bean, and “censures the member accordingly” and “suspends the member from the service of the House.”

During Friday’s sitting, the Censure Motion passed with 19 “yes” votes, with all OBA MPs voting in favour; while will PLP MPs abstained from voting saying the “PLP felt that to participate in the vote would legitimize what we believe to be a flawed motion and flawed procedure.”

After the vote passed, Mr Bean was asked to leave the floor of the House and, with the police present, he was escorted out to begin his one-week suspension.

PLP Chairman Maynard Dill’s Comments

Mr Dill said, “The Bermuda Progressive Labour Party gives our unwavering and unreserved support to our leader Marc Bean in the wake of the undemocratic and borderline dictatorial activities that occurred in the House of Assembly last Friday.

“At a time when Bermudians are facing record job losses, a historic low in tourism arrivals, skyrocketing prices on essentials, and to many, a sense that Bermuda isn’t working for Bermudians; the OBA seems more interested in destroying Marc Bean, than with getting on with the job of reducing the high unemployment rate that is affecting the social fabric of Bermuda.

“The OBA continues to refuses to admit missteps, and correct them by doing the right thing and doing what is right for the benefit of Bermudians and Bermuda,” added Mr Dill.

“We understand their political campaign of trying to destroy the integrity of our Leader Marc Bean, as this has been a ploy against all our Leaders. Consequently, we call on the Government to put their Party campaign aside in favor of the interest of Bermuda and Bermudians, with fairness and transparency.

“The Bermuda Progressive Labour Party will not be silenced, will not be intimidated and will remain unwavering in our commitment to a Bermuda that works for all and not just for the chosen few.”

I for one totally agree with the PLP keeping Marc Bean as their leader.

    • Huh? says:

Well you have nothing to worry about. Censuring Bean will not make him reconsider his actions nor will it cause the members of the PLP to reflect on their choice of leadership.
In fact Pettingil’s motion is a massive waste of everybody’s time. It is ineffectual and pointless and demonstrates how easily the OBA are dragged down to the level of mudslinging PLP tactics.
      Shame on all of them.
Get back to work you slobs!

    • A Front Ed says:

Yes, he will lose the PLP the next election….

      • Trulytruly says:

I guess this Jamahl’s work. Back at it.

  2. Raymond Ray says:

Had the 3 members of the Progressive Labour Party been present and everyone opposed the motion it still would not have made a difference :-( Now dig into your bag of tricks so as you may try to once again “hoodwink” others…You bie’s have the gift of gab. What’s that old time saying, ” fill peoples heads with bullcrap and dazzle them with diamonds.”

    • Raymond Ray says:

I’m quoting someone here: ” the same if I do not support the P.L.P. can not remove Mark Bean. No Political strategy will do it. We must put our focus on running of the country and JOBS. People are suffering.”
Well I agree to an extent with that statement(1st.)I can not remove Marc Bean. And (2nd.) “We must put our focus on running of the country and JOBS. People are suffering.”
Unfortunately, the Progressive Labour Party are its own worse enemy and they can / shall remove Marc Beam in due time. Yes people are being hired but not everyone at one time but 500 are said to be hired at the airport once the wheels start rolling e.g. permission from England. There are countless people who have been and are being hired around the Island as; a matter of fact why aren’t more Bermudians learning trades if one’s needed? Stop pointing your finger at a foreigner here doing menial jobs that just about any Bermudian can do!

      • Mockingjay says:

Did and are the U.B.P./oba still supporting Craig.
        TIC TOC

        • hmmm says:

The fact the the PLP support Bean, Burt and Brown following their sideshows says it all.

          • Trulytruly says:

Yes it’s laid bare before us nearly daily now. Leadership battle. Totally obvious why too.

        • The Truth and Nothing but the Truth !! says:

Power struggle in the PLP/UBP is near, emphasis on UBP!! TIC TOC TIC TOC!

  3. Kangoocar says:

Once again the plp are wrong??? They think it is a political campaign that is trying to destroy the integrity of the plp leader bean??? NO, beany himself is doing just fine on his own with destroying what little integrity he MIGHT have ever had????

    • Come Correct says:

Bean does about as good a job at screwing himself as you do butchering the English language. Mockingay has better grammar than you.

    • Another Pawn says:

Your wrong Craig aka former OBA leader did far worst then Mark. The leader of the UBP just recently rewarded Craig with a $150,000 dollar Minister seat. Opps kangoocar you keep cracking the UBP glass house.

    • Build a Better Bermuda says:

So if they don’t believe in legitimizing a censure motion against a members disrespectful behaviour, why then do they have a motion to censure the Speaker?
Let’s face, the PLP would never condone one of their own’s disreputable behaviour, even when one of their leaders was involved in the illegal human trafficking of for people, because they ideologically unable tone. Instead they have no problem deceiving, misrepresenting and misleading the people and their supporters to continue to hide the fact that they are divided by the fundamental differences of the right and left wing ideologies and the egos that lead them in the party. The only reason they tolerate each other is for the pursuit of politcal power by consolidating their voting bases.

      • Lois Frederick says:

Interesting point. So by the PLP’s logic, it is only the Speaker who can remove himself from the House. Of course the motion will fail without the numbers anyway, so it’s a moot point.

        • Build a Better Bermuda says:

Not according to Mr. Bean, he thinks he should be the one who decides who get to be MP’s and the Speaker in the House.

  4. Unbelievable says:

“the OBA seems more interested in destroying Marc Bean, than with getting on with the job of reducing the high unemployment rate that is affecting the social fabric of Bermuda”

What nonsense. First: Marc Bean is only responsible for what happens to himself. He’ll survive this with flying colours no doubt but if he wasn’t so aggressive with his comments about people who aren’t PLP, he probably wouldn’t be in this situation. And second, yes there is a high number of people unemployed but when will the PLP and their supporters accept they were the ones who put Bermuda in this position? When will PLP supporters take their party to task?
For all the mud-slinging that the PLP does at the OBA, they have not come up with any viable solution to the problems that they created whatsoever. And no….online gaming will not solve these problems.

    • Mockingjay says:

A typical strategy in war, take the head out.

      • BTCHECKER says:

Its not a war Mockingjay – this is the main problem with Bean and the PLP’s us and them tactics.

What Burt does is the correct opposition – attacking policies not people and ideas not race.

        Grow up

  5. Trulytruly says:

Unwavering support. Wavering ability for voters to grasp the lows the plp continue to plunge down to. This is great news for the OBA, as on balance voters will face a crystal clear choice, not unlike the UK elections. Miliband literally scared billions of pounds out of the UK, now returning with the Tory victory. Those that miss any correlation with Bermuda’s not so far off election might get a rude awakening if the plp regained power with their diabolical track record of overspending and now with their recent extreme and downright off putting behavior. Money hates uncertainty and the plp created an aura of political uncertainty that business runs from. They are playing with Bermuda’s and Bermudians future like it is a game. How misguided they are.

    • Redman says:

      PLP: “Unwavering And Unreserved Support”

It just keeps getting better, PLP guaranteed to be the opposition for the next two elections then. That means we still have a chance of turning things around. Bermuda thanks you in advance.

  6. Stephen Thomson says:

Why is it so incredibly difficult in Bermuda for some to simply say “I am sorry. I was wrong”.
Not a mention about what actually happened or an apology from the opposition.
Change the paradigm. Man up and apologize for your actions. You’ll have more credibility from most of us Bermudians.

    • Unbelievable says:

The PLP does not show weakness. It does not give anyone who is not on their team any concessions. There is no self-reflection and no admitting it may have been wrong.

It’s their way or the highway.

      • johnny says:

You just described the OBA to a tee.

        • inna says:

          And your point is??

        • Build a Better Bermuda says:

Really, in the last couple years they had a leader step down for his stupid actions, they have apologized for not having gotten the economy turned around to the position they had hope it would be at by now. The only thing they aren’t apologizing for is having to make hard choices that they know not everyone will agree with, and might not see the target of the long term gain.

    • Mockingjay says:

Any apologies from Dunkley in his famous, What a waste of F!@#ing film, or from Craig…………………………..

      • Redman says:

        @ Mockingjay,

I guess you missed this then lol.

        Bernews, 18th Feb 2014:

Update 5.21pm: The Minister said, “I have reached out to Mr. Swan and Mr. Starling to apologize personally to both gentlemen.

“That said, I have apologized already for what I termed my use of ‘intemperate language in the course of a private exchange’ before the House of Assembly re-started.

        “I respect…”

    • mj says:

If you were paying any attention Steve you would have heard the apoplogy in the HOA on Friday by Mr. Mark Bean… so does that make a difference now or are you just hellbent on making a negative comment against the loyal opposition leader..knowing that he has apologized, will that now give him more credibility in your eyes?

      • Lois Frederick says:

Reread the statement. He did not apologise. He said, “Mr. Speaker, I would like to first begin by extending my profound apologies to the people of this country for the tumultuous period of transition that we find ourselves proceeding through”. It was a trick shot and play on words, that obviously fooled you and other sympathisers. Deceptive as always and only further reinforces his questionable character.

        • Raymond Ray says:

@mj: Tricks of the magician. “What the eyes see and the ears hear the mind tends to believes.” Not all politician are the same, yes some are different.

      • Build a Better Bermuda says:

He never apologized for his behaviour, he instead tried to deflect it as being the fault of everyone but him

    • steve says:

Many of us would say- Not apologizing or accepting responsibility (for anything… ever) is a sign of weakness and insecurity.Maybe politicians think plenty of voters are small minded and view an admission as some sort of mini defeat? Votes are measured in Quantity not Quality.

  7. Pay Attention says:

Bermudians pay attention. What took place in the HOA on Friday May 15, die heart OBA supporters may relishing in job but it sets an unhealthy stance.

This means that whenever the sitting government feels the opposition is not doing as they the government approve of, and the speaker agrees, they may be removed from the HOA.

I listened and even the deputy leader was over-zealous with her rulings and the spoke very disrespectful to the opposition members.

Bermuda, the OBA has turned Bermuda into a dictatorship governance presently and this is a very dangerous position to place the country.

    • Bill says:

      Die heart?

      • Kangoocar says:

Good catch, obviously it is one of the Bettie’s/ Alaska hall writing in to defend their own press release, “die heart” is a dead give away every time!!! The plp become more pathetic every day????

      • navin johnson says:

they refer to the Bruce Willis movies..Die Heart,Die Heart with a Vengeance….and another thought may Marc Bean stay as leader forever which would guarantee the PLP remain the Opposition….

        • Computer Guy says:

Let me double-check on imdb…but I’m pretty sure the movie was called “Die Hard”. Sorry to be nitpicky…just the fact that the wrong name keeps getting repeated is bugging me..lol.

          • stunned... says:

they’re mixing up “Die Heart” with “Braveheart” similarly with “All timers”, “Old timers” for “Alzheimer’s”.

          • Navin Johnson says:

Of course it’s Die Hard…I was referring to the comment made by Pay Attention above referring to OBA Die Hearts

            • stunned... says:

sorry. sometimes you just can’t tell with this forum…lol

    • Jus Wonderin' says:

They haven’t, you just believe anything you hear. You say/hear it so much it becomes truth lmao! THAT’S ALL!

    • Build a Better Bermuda says:

How quickly you forget the attitude shown by the PLP in their governance of the house, bring a motion to censure a member who has been at the Center of some of the worst behaviour the house has seen is a far cry from the dictatorial running the PLP engaged in during their tenure at the helm. I am greatly disappointed that the PLP have let their leader run this far with his constant disrespect and distain for a government that was elected over him. The PLP way failed the people of this country to the tune of over a billion dollars, and thousands of jobs and ey continue to complain when the OBA is left with little alternative to getting us back on track in a constantly changing and competitive global environment. No PLP thinker will ever admit or allow the membership to understand that this is where they brought us, and that the PLP way would have seen us sold to the IMF. If history has shown us anything in the last couple decades, it is that the PLP are great for social think, charisma and grand postulating, but miserable when it comes to creating actually creating anything sustainable and even worse at managing an economy, and that charisma and grand postulations does mean they can lead nor will they create jobs.

    • The Truth and Nothing but the Truth !! says:

Ask Craig Cannonair or M. Fahy and or Bob, @ Stephen Thompson

    • rhonda says:

Plp hopes none of them are removed before the next election

      • Redman says:

        @ rhonda,

With Mr. Bean & co with their constant misguided shenanigans it would take Dr. Brown joining & running for the OBA to have them voted out. LOL

  9. Lois Frederick says:

I expected nothing less from a party that while in Government made even worse decisions that affected each and every one of us and future generations. They continue to make bad decisions that can only worsen their already weaken position, unable to learn from their mistakes. The defiant and hostile tone that the press release evokes, is par for the course of a party in a sorry state, digging their own grave.

  10. Rhonnie aka Blue familiar says:

A wise man knows when to say nothing.

  11. Bermudian says:

I hope the members of the PLP remember that their first loyalty should be to the constituents who voted them in to represent them, and not to Mr. Bean. If not they all deserve to resign as they would have lost any right to be a MP (Member of Parliament).

So what if his censured, like we tell children, “if you do the crime, you have to do the time”. Besides, that is one of the reasons that both parties have a deputy leader, if Mr. Burt cannot handle the job as acting leader for a week then the party is in serious trouble.

Oh, and for the words, “dictatorial activities” was it not when the PLP was the government of the day, on premier made the comment, “the opposition can have it’s say, but the government will have it’s way”, that plus other actions during their time in power was “dictatorial activities”.

Mr. Marc Bean, if you have integrity as you claim you do, i believe it is time for you to accept that the roll as leader is not for you and that it is time to fall on your sword and resign. Mr. Cannoniar did it when he embarrassed his party with jetgate, now you must do the same.

  12. Pastor Syl says:

Oops! The censure motion was for a completely different piece of inappropriate behavior. Sorry! I guess I’m just not keeping up, or perhaps he is just too, too busy in his negative activity

  13. Hmm says:

A political party supports this behavior??? Madness of the MAWI definition.
How’s that one week time out working for Ya potty-mouth almighty? Keep Calm and quit. Take your BIU puppet with you when you go.

  14. Raymond Ray says:

@ Bermudian: You hit proverbial nail upon its head with the following statement, “Oh,and for the words,”dictatorial activities” was it not when the P.L.P. was the Government of the day, our Premier made the comment, “the Opposition can have it’s say, but the Government will have it’s way”, that plus other actions during their time in power was
    “dictatorial activities”.
Oh how soon some forget or choose not to recall. “What the eyes see and the ears hear some peoples mind tend to believe.”

  15. Jus Wonderin' says:

“At a time when Bermudians are facing record job losses, a historic low in tourism arrivals, skyrocketing prices on essentials, and to many, a sense that Bermuda isn’t working for Bermudians; the OBA seems more interested in destroying Marc Bean, than with getting on with the job of reducing the high unemployment rate that is affecting the social fabric of Bermuda.”

Replace Marc Bean with Dunkley, Cannonaire, etc and you lot DO THE EXACT SAME. HYPOCRITES!

  16. aceboy says:

The PLP support Marc Bean after all his tirades and lack of any sort of decorum? Figures.

  17. Coffee says:

I was under the impression that the UBP/OBA had a mandate to create jobs for Bermudians . No jobs created thus far but , one serious attempt to make sure Mark Bean can’t work in Bermuda !

One word of advice to Mark Bean ; Never show your enemies strenght before the fight !

Randy Horton ; your name and reputation is in the toilet . Once respected , now a pariah in your community . When the UBP/OBA is done with you ,the pension check will be of no comfort .

May the mighty PLP return to Government soon !

    • Anbu says:

LMFAO!!!!! Mighty pee el pee hahahaha. Thanx for the laugh on this crappy monday hahahaha.

      • Trulytruly says:

How the once mighty plp have fallen.

    • Lois Frederick says:

You must not live on the island then, because I drive past Pink Beach regularly and see a huge building site full of people doing construction work, then I drive past Ariel Sands and hear jackhammers preparing the site and have seen their plans for a $90 million development and then up at Pompano construction workers building new hotel rooms in preparation for the AC35, drive up to Dockyards and there is a buzz of activity, then down at Fairmont Hamilton the new restaurant and outside terrace areas are being worked on, across the road I see the site being prepared for new luxury condominiums by Bacardi, then where I live, the house next to me is having a big addition built and the house opposite is having renovations done. Things are happening and that means jobs have been created and are being created, as more projects start up, with Morgan’s Point, Elbow Beach and then the new Airport a year or so away. Of course there are still those unemployed, as the OBA have had to literally resurrect Bermuda’s economy from a pile of ashes, but progress is being made slowly but surely. Where are you anyway? I suggest you take off your blinkers.

  18. Kettle or pot says:

    Put Zane as the leader!

    • Trulytruly says:

Nah. Too much baggage, that’s about to be opened and seen for all to see. But then again the plp have a reputation for making poor choices, so they could still do it.

    • Raymond Ray says:

You’ll never see that :-( It’s his skin tone/or mouth that will prevent that from happening :-(

      • Redman says:

        @ Raymond Ray,

It’s his skin tone that will prevent that from happening anytime soon. On the other note they love to hear his mouth, when his foot isn’t in it that is.

  19. Double D says:

Comes as no surprise to me.

The PLP put forward jahmal Simmons as a candidate after his tweets about burning and violence.

This ‘unwavering’ defense speaks volume about this organization as well as anybody who thinks such rhetoric is becoming of so called ‘leaders.’

I expect the same cry of dictatorial behaviour when the PLP put forward their censure motion against the speaker and label Marc Bean’s comments about next week being MP Horton’s last day in the House as being un democratic? Wouldn’t want to be hypocrites right PLP? Never mind, you guys live by the do as I say and not as I do mantra.

    Carry on.

  20. Just a matter of time says:

Such hypocrites. Yet you support an OBA Premier who mouthed out disgusting expletives on a hot mic where children could have been listening in this so called sanctuary of a HOA as he was denigrating someone else from his high pedestal. Where’s the talk of censorship there and his being escorted out like a common criminal as was Mr. Bean? Oh right…it’s SELECTIVE.. Gotcha.

    • Bermyman says:

It is one thing to say that something is a waste of F ing time! It is another to make a personal attack on someone by referencing their gender, their integrity and accusing them of partaking in sexual acts with others.

Do the PLP not have respect for the women of this country?

      • Redman says:

        @ Bermyman,

Nope, they have no respect for women. By their actions they don’t have any for themselves let alone anyone else.

    • Rhonnie aka BlueFamiliar says:

That you can’t see the difference between what Dunkley did and what Bean did is more than a little concerning.

  21. A Front Ed says:

I find it astonishing that an Opposition leader who is about to appear in court, who has been excluded from the House, who has made homophobic and allegedly mysoginistic remarks, who has admitted using ganja tea on his child and who has publicly threatened the Speaker of the House can remain as a leader. This speaks volumes of those who support him.

  22. aceboy says:

lol….Dunkley was caught on a mic telling the truth….that the issue at hand was a waste of f-ing time.

He did not threaten anyone, call anyone a racist dog, didn’t call a female MP a political w**** who he would pass around amongst his friends.

That is what YOU are defending.

    • Raymond Ray says:

@ aceboy and any Progressive Labour Party female affiliate, how can a woman or anyone believe in human rights condone that asinine bie’s behavior yet along support him?
I’ll repeat A Front Ed letter prior to mine: “I find it astonishing that an Opposition leader who is about to appear in court, who has been excluded from the House, who has made homophobic and allegedly misogynistic remarks, who has admitted using ganja tea on his child and who has publicly threatened the Speaker of the House can remain as a Leader. This speaks volumes of those who support him.” (Yes volumes of them who can/do support that mindset.)

  23. Yahoo says:

Marc Bean is a clown and this suspension is well deserved.

However, it only seemed to take a vote so is there any reason why the government cannot do this whenever they feel like it? Or does someone like the Speaker have to approve taking it to a vote? What would prevent the OBA from voting to suspend any PLP person any time they want? They always have the votes to win…

  24. Triangle Drifter says:

The PLP has a good number of potential leaders who are good reasons to vote OBA but, without question, Bean is the very best.

    Stand strong. Support Bean.

  25. Balanced Facts says:

    WOW! Unwavering and unreserved?
Sure didn’t sound like a lot of strong support on Friday from his own colleagues! From my stand point I hope he stays as leader! However, I have no doubt that they will not keep him for the next election, its the usual “we had to deceive you!” PLP tactic. He is an embarrassment to the Party! Lets hear from individuals like Kim Wilson, Walton Brown, Dennis Lister (we know what Terry thought of Bean!). “Unreserved “? Really? I don’t think so!

    • Lois Frederick says:

They too attempted to defend the indefensible in the debate that preceded the vote, only further tarnishing their own reputations. Kim Wilson knows better too.

  26. Ruthless says:

Yup! They were unwavering and supportive of Jennifer Scott and Alex Scott too. Mark, if you can’t see clearly I will say it for you. At the next election, right after you get them all the young votes, you will be axed. The term we had to deceive you comes to mind.

  27. Legal Eagle says:

No doubt the OBA’s pleased the PLP ‘unreservedly supports’Bean+Burt’s antics What a Party of misfits they are! Kim Wilson’s support/silence disapoints! Previously-thought better of her! Clearly the OBA secretly hope the PLP keep Bean+Burt as PLP leaders forever! Lol!!

    • Trulytruly says:

Kim spoke in his defense on Friday. Bad move.
