100 Women in Hedge Funds Bermuda Launch

July 2, 2015

Women from all industry sectors across Bermuda turned out to celebrate the official launch of 100 Women in Hedge Funds [100WHF] at the recent Global Fund Forum.

Sponsored by EY, the event drew more than 100 women for the June 22 launch of the Bermuda location, coinciding with the Hedge Connection-organised conference at the Fairmont Southampton.

Keynote speaker was James Rosebush, former deputy assistant to US President Ronald Reagan and chief of staff to First Lady, Nancy Reagan, along with EY’s Natalie Deak Jaros, Americas Hedge Fund Markets Co-Leader.

Jaros challenged 100WHF Bermuda members to continue to champion efforts that accelerate women’s progress to close the 80-year gender parity gap identified in the EY initiative, Women. Fast forward.

“I’m excited about the launch of 100WHF and its first event,” said BDA Chair Caroline Foulger.

“This innovative and rapidly changing financial services marketplace poses an ideal environment for talented women to rise into leadership roles, supported by organisations like 100WHF.

“I’m especially pleased to recognise that one of our 100WHF Bermuda founding members, Laura Taylor, Principal, CFO, Nephila Capital, and our event speaker, EY’s Natalie Deak Jaros, have both been named as ‘50 Leading Women in Hedge Funds’ by The Hedge Fund Journal. Congratulations, and thank you for your support.”

Alison Morrison, Managing Director, Oyster Consulting, and a member of the BDA’s Asset Management industry focus group, was the driving force behind establishment of a Bermuda location for 100WHF. She thanked attendees for their support in reaching the goal of 100 registered members within three months.

“Jim’s address provided empowering advice on effective communications, encouraging the audience to be authentic, curious, and focused, among other tips,” she said, “and Natalie’s delivery of EY’s insights around women as an economic imperative made our inaugural event not only relevant, but inspirational. EY’s current gender parity countdown clock, set at the year 2095 at current progress rates, is provocative and underscores why we support organisations like 100WHF.”

Morrison thanked Hedge Connection, organiser of the June 22-24 Global Fund Forum; EY for helping to build and sponsor the event; and founding women members who helped launch the Bermuda location.

“It was indeed a memorable first event,” she said. “100WHF Bermuda intends to grow its membership locally and looks forward to hosting future educational and networking events.”

Formed in 2001, 100WHF is a global organisation that links more than 13,000 professional women in the alternative investment, asset management, investor and broader financial services industry. The group offers networking, educational and philanthropic opportunities in more than 19 locations across three continents and has raised over $36 million for philanthropic causes in the areas of women’s health, education and mentoring.
