Third Hurricane Of 2015 Atlantic Season: Joaquin
[Updated] Tropical Storm Joaquin has formed in the Atlantic, becoming the 10th named storm of the season, however the Bermuda Weather Service said that it is not threat to Bermuda at this time, and its closest point of approach to Bermuda within 72 hours has passed.
“High pressure to our northeast continues to interact with Tropical Storm Joaquin to the distant southwest,” the BWS said.
“Periods of rain with heavier showers will be present this afternoon, decreasing overnight with moderate to strong winds that persist through the week.
“Tropical Storm Joaquin will continue to be monitored for any changes in the forecast track.”
The U.S. National Hurricane Center said, “At 1100 AM EDT [1500 UTC], the center of Tropical Storm Joaquin was located near latitude 26.5 North, longitude 70.8 West.
“Joaquin is moving toward the west near 5 mph [7 km/h], and this general motion is expected to continue for the next 48 hours.
“Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 45 mph [75 km/h] with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 70 miles [110 km] from the center.”
Update Sept 30, 2.50pm: Joaquin has now strengthened into a hurricane – the third of the 2015 Atlantic season.
The BWS said it is not a threat to Bermuda at this time, and its closest point of approach to Bermuda within 72 hrs is forecast to be 483 nautical miles to the WSW at 12.00pm on Saturday, October 3rd.
