Forensic Nurses Week Observed In Bermuda

The Sexual Assault Response Team and Department of Health observes Forensic Nurses Week from November 9 – 13, 2015, recognizing nurses both locally and worldwide who provide exceptional care every day to men, women, and children who have experienced violence or trauma.

“Celebrated internationally through local events and education efforts, Forensic Nurses Week raises awareness about forensic nursing practice. To mark the week, Forensic Nurses worldwide wear lilac on Friday November 13, 2015 the designated colour of Forensic Nursing,” a spokesperson said.

“The Bermuda Sexual Assault Response Team [SART] recognizes the following Forensic Nurses for providing exceptional patient care usually at unsociable hours of the morning:

  • Judith Brewster
  • Gaynell Hayward-Caesar

“Congratulations to the  Sexual Assault Examiners who have completed 5 days of sexual assault training in February 2015.

“Forensic nurses engage on every level—from the local to the global. On September 22 – 23, 2015, in Geneva, a forensic nurse, Sheila Early, RN BScN, Immediate Past President of the International Association of Forensic Nurses [IAFN], joined 138 delegates and 27 speakers from 38 countries at the World Health Organization’s 7th Milestones Meeting of the Global Campaign for Violence Prevention.”

Ms. Early said, “Until we live in a world without violence, forensic nurses will seek to strengthen the role of the health system in addressing violence and continue to provide expert and compassionate care to patients who require these specialized services.”
