[Updated with video] Team Oracle of Berkeley Institute beat out 23 teams from eight high schools to win the inaugural Cardboard Boat Challenge held this afternoon [Nov 19] at the Bermuda National Sports Centre Aquatics Centre.
Teams of two to four students had two hours to build a boat, which could float two people, out of only the supplied materials, including four cardboard sheets, duct tape and a box cutter.
The Challenge, organised by the Institute of Bermuda Architects [IBA] and the Bermuda Association of Professional Engineers [BAPE], aims to encourage students to consider careers in architecture and engineering.
Team Oracle comprising of Jecoa Thomas, Tyrese Cheeseman, Eduardo Viera Jr and Camerin Pickering were the fastest to complete a 50m lap of the pool in a time of 1 minute.
.
Stephanie Simons, BAPE Committee Secretary and co-organiser, says, “At BAPE we are always looking for ways to introduce students to technical fields and this event is a fun and creative way to get them thinking like an engineer or architect. Working in teams to find a solution to a problem is a key function of what engineers and architects do in their jobs daily.”
Dem Tillerz from Berkeley Institute comprising of Koya Mioshi Harris, Dazhja Greaves, Emani Parsons and Eshe White were second fastest down the pool in 1 minute 13 seconds. Sea Venture from Saltus Grammar School comprising of Adriana Penroddocke, Laura Hope and Amalia Pontes were third in 1 minute 23 seconds.
Duncan Simons, Vice President, IBA, says, “We wanted to get students excited about architecture and engineering as careers in Bermuda and beyond. Collaboration, problem solving, planning and creativity are key to our success as professionals and these are certainly skills that the winning team had to draw on today.
“This challenge has also provided the opportunity for students and teachers to build connections in our professions that they can draw on in the future. Over the coming year we hope to build on the success of this event.”
Aside from bragging rights for the year and other prizes, Team Oracle secured a site visit to the Team Oracle base at Dockyard. Dem Tillerz secured a site visit to a multi-story condo building under construction and Sea Venture will visit BELCO.
A “Non-Mariner’s” Prize was awarded to It’s Not for Sail of Saltus Grammar School for the team who almost made it, comprised of Dylan Somerville, Logan Krueger, Taylor Mullan and Tristan Mullan.
The event was sponsored by BELCO and BESCO.
