World Town Planning Day On November 6th
The Department of Planning is inviting members of the public to join them in recognizing World Town Planning Day on Friday, November 6.
“Since 1949, World Town Planning Day has been celebrated in more than 30 countries. Bermuda supports World Town Planning Day as an opportunity to promote better understanding and awareness of Bermuda’s Planners and planning to local communities and all levels of government,” the Department said.
“In recognition of the World Town Planning Day theme this year of ‘Housing Regeneration: Strengthening Communities’, the Department will host an open house which will showcase the work and public contribution thus far towards creating a local plan for NE Hamilton, affectionately known as ‘back of town’.
“The physical characteristics of this area are more akin to a neighborhood, with predominantly residential forms of development, than the remainder of the city which has a more financial services ‘flavour’ to it.
“This is why the Department is taking the time to develop a detailed and highly visual plan for this area, in collaboration with the hard work and vast contribution of the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation and the Corporation of Hamilton.
“The Department welcomes members of the public to come and see the ideas that have been generated thus far and to also provide your own valuable input as the process of creating a plan continues. A tour of the Department may also be available for interested parties on this day.”
The Minister of Home Affairs Michael Fahy said, “The primary reasons that we celebrate World Town Planning Day are to draw attention to the aims, objectives, and progress of urban and regional planning around the globe, to highlight the valuable contributions sound planning has made to the quality of global human settlements and their environment and to give worldwide coverage to the ideals of urban and regional planning not only within the profession but also among the general public.
“In some way, shape, or form, the profession of planning is integral to everyone. As such we would like to take this opportunity to open our doors to engage with the community.”
