Cann Named Marine & Ports Director Designate
The Ministry of Tourism Development and Transport has announced that Warden of Pilots Rudolph William Cann [pictured] has been named Director Designate of the Department of Marine & Ports Services.
A spokesperson said, “The Director Designate has over 30 year experience in the maritime industry. He began his career with the Department of Marine and Ports in 1980 in an entry level position.
“Mr. Cann progressed through the Ferry Service, becoming a Senior Ferry Pilot, and was selected as an Apprentice Branch Pilot in 1987 and commenced nautical studies as a Bursary Student.
“A graduate of the Nova Scotia Nautical College in Canada with an Officer of the Watch [OOW] Certification and a Higher National Diploma [HND] in Nautical Science in 1992, he received his Unlimited Branch Pilot certification that same year.
“Mr. Cann returned to service on the high seas to gain further experience and certification from 1994 -1997 working as a Navigation Officer for Celebrity Cruises.
“He was named Senior Branch Pilot in 2001 and promoted to Warden of Pilots in 2008. He has a long and effective track record as a manager in public service and is presently undertaking further certification in Port Management at North West Kent College in the United Kingdom.”
Mr. Cann said, “I have been involved in the maritime industry for my entire professional life and look forward to the opportunity to continue to contribute to the Bermuda maritime heritage.”
“Mr. Cann will continue with his professional development with the intent to make him the ideal candidate to assume the Director’s post in July 2017 when the incumbent Director’s contract expires.”

Hard work and dedication even at a senior level pays off as he will now be the Director.
