MP Zane DeSilva: “I Could No Longer Serve”

December 3, 2015

DESILVA, ZANE“After months of careful consideration I came to the conclusion that I could no longer serve in a Shadow Cabinet led by Marc Bean,” Progressive Labour Party MP Zane DeSilva said this evening [Dec 3].

Mr DeSilva said, “For the sake of clarification, I wish to inform my constituents and the Bermudian public that last week, prior to the announcement of the Shadow Cabinet shuffle, I resigned as Shadow Minister for Tourism.

“After months of careful consideration I came to the conclusion that I could no longer serve in a Shadow Cabinet led by Marc Bean.

“I have expressed my thoughts to the Opposition Leader and he is fully aware of my concerns. I shall remain in service to Constituency 29 and the Progressive Labour Party.”

There has been speculation over the past few days that some segments within the party desire a change in leadership, and Mr DeSilva’s statement follows after the announcement earlier today of a new, smaller Shadow Cabinet.

The new Shadow Cabinet does not include Mr DeSilva, Wayne Furbert, Walton Brown, Glenn Blakeney, Rolfe Commissiong, Kim Wilson, and Derrick Burgess; while Jamahl Simmons has been added into the Shadow Cabinet.

We have reached out to other MPs seeking comment and will update if able.

    • Rock Paper Scissors says:

The rich people in the OBA must be secretly paying the PLP delegates to keep Bean as leader. I voted PLP but I would rather stay away and not vote then trust Mark to lead this Country with his radical attitude. 2012 election all over again.

      • Rock Paper Scissors says:

….just like when all the other PLP supporters didn’t vote. That’s the only reason the OBA won.

        • Hey... says:

Many of my PLP friends said they voted OBA at the last election. And I am sure we will see many more swing voters at the next election.

          • Regina says:

Hey where’s Betty Dump? Either she has nothing to say about this or maybe, just maybe, she lost her blogging job with this latest shuffle?

Keep your mouth shut and let some think you’re an a**, or open it and prove it to the rest of us…..

          • JAWS says:

Sorry but he’s correct many people at my job today said they would never vote plp if Mr. Bean stays as leader.

Even Scientist said “Call the f***** police. I’ll knock your block off when he heard about this”.

              • hmmm says:

ermm OK good luck with that.

              • jt says:

Erron Hill has far more to offer than most of the current shadow cabinet and many that resigned. He is still raw. His ability to help Bermuda (all of Bermuda) will depend on how and from whom he gathers his experience.

        • Awake says:

Get your head out of the sand!

        • Longtail says:

Rock Paper Scissor – another blind supporter of the PLP!!
Why are you blaming the PLP supporters (who didn’t vote) for the PLP’s loss of the last election???? It was NOT the electorate that lost the election, it was the PLP leaders of the day through their bad leadership and bad decisions that lost the election. Bermudians need to place the blame where it belongs and learn from the past mistakes.

      • Izzypop says:

He got rid of them before they got rid of him cause he knew if they win next election he would be bye bye.

    • Onion Juice says:

Looks like the Old Guard is stepping down and the Young Bloods are stepping up.

      • hmmm says:

No, the PLP is a mess and Bean has circled wagons to protect Bean. Sadly that is not in the interests of Bermuda and the people of Bermuda, but in the interests of BEAN.

        • hmmm says:

Onion Juice, the PLP is a mess, stop pretending otherwise.

People deserve the truth not more PLP lies, spin and misinformation !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          • Natalie says:

Totally agreed, people need to stop this beating around the bush. Plp most problematic party in Bermuda history. There is no more hope for them.

        • Faulk says:

UBP very much alive and well, just rebranded – maybe a lesson there for the PLP too?

  3. swing voter says:

well so much for not discussing internal matters in public

  4. Reality Check says:

Good move Zane. Honest, direct, unequivocal. This shows a man standing his ground on principle and not just sucking up.

Pity that Jamahl took the bait, but that’s in line with his record. Surprised but pleased to see that Rolfe is on the out with Bean. Perhaps Rolfe is finally maturing.

    • Ryan says:

His history notwithstanding, Rolfe is one of the better people in the PLP right now; I’ve actually always found him pleasant and thoughtful. Needless to say, I am also happy to see he is on the out with Bean.

    • Ms Brows Boyz says:

I’m confused? You dump the most vocal supporters of the PLP and you promote the loose canon? WTF? However, I’m on the fence on this one and waiting for more info.

Was Zane and the others pushed out because Marc is a man of principal and needed to distance himself from this crew because of their recent past?

Were they pushed out because they were people of principal and didn’t agree with Marcs volatile, aggressive and sometimes childish leadership style?

Or might it be because the PLP elite don’t like the idea of anyone that ‘don’t look like Marc” being the face of the country.

So much for all being welcome to join the PLP? I guess that means, we welcome your money, not your ideas!

  5. I don't like Zane says:

He’s got issues but at least he realizes that Marc Bean SUCKS. From a concerned PLP supporter.

  6. Lois Frederick says:

First out of the blocks suggests he is ready to mount a challenge to the Leadership when the time is right. Although he has more baggage than most of them, that is full of dirty laundry, that will need to be aired soon. That’s what overconfidence will do.

Craig’s busy right now sweeping Blackwatch Pass !

      • Ms Brows Boyz says:

LOL Diverse???? You got rid of one the ONE white PLP minister you had? I’m getting a warm and fuzzy feeling right now because of your statement.

No wait! Sorry, my mistake…sorry for the wait it wasn’t a warm and fuzzy feeling, it was diarrhea.

    • Hmmm says:

So coffee which one of the PLP are you ?

      • Coffee says:

        I’m actually your counterpart .

        • hmmm says:

I have no affiliation with any political party and never will. I am not a member with any political party. I am a Bermudian and a voter.

So how about answering my question. Which one of the PLP are you?

          • Coffee says:

As I said , and it up to you to accept , I’m your counterpart … I enjoy the banter against the ‘other party ‘ whomever they maybe .

      • Cup Of Tea Anyone? says:

he would be the Binford one….
oh wait…..perhaps i should be more specific

        toodles!

Housecleaning and much needed reconstruction of the best Party to Lead the Government hands down.I just hope that the people in the Party dont use their old ambush politics as they did in the past ,and clearly give the Public their best leaders for the people and avoid the money grabbers and self serving wannabees that are in all administrations where there is an opportunity for self first and the people last.Best of luck to my Party to get it right this time.We are with you if you do…….O.B.A is not an option.

    • Jim says:

How can it be the best party to lead the government if it needs housecleaning and a ‘much needed reconstruction’???

I never understood those who blindly support the same party, election after election, in BDA or anywhere else…

      • Triangle Drifter says:

Lots of people treat a political party like a major league sports team. They stick by their city or regions team through thick & thin. That is OK. It is just a sport. Win or lose that team has no effect really on their lives other than what they choose.

Politics is not a sport. It is not a game. Politicians make decisions that affect everyone. They make decisions that affect our decendants for generations to come.

When a political party makes the wrong decisions the electorate should throw them out at the first opportunity. You don’t keep voting for them ‘just because that is who you always vote for’.

That action is simply dumb. Worse than dumb, if enough are dumb enough the results are bad for everyone.

Witness the massive debt that Bermuda is in & who put us there.

        • umok says:

Hypocrisy at its best. You stick to the OBA like white on rice irregardless of the topic at hand.

          • Triangle Drifter says:

You have a poor memory or are very selective in what you read.

While I support the basic philosophy of the OBA I do not hesitate whenever I feel a jab is needed in their direction.

My latest being a shot at them for being so slow at getting gaming going. I believe that was only a few days ago. My own OBA MP has been the target of my wrath recently on these forums.

I am not alone when it comes to criticising the OBA.

Big difference between the OBA supporter & PLP supporter. We give them a tongue/finger lashing as needed. The PLP supporter at best, goes silent, but usually tries to defend the indefencible.

            • Onion Juice says:

Like when the U.B.P. supporters tried to defend Jet Gate and all the other Gates.
              Mmmmmm

              • Cup Of Tea Anyone? says:

aaaaaannnnddddd…….other than being a silly amateur mistake, what came out of “jetgate”?
other than the ministers sitting in comfort drinking nice tea and eating crackers?

                serious.
                stop being such a binford.

                toodles!

            • Hey... says:

Very true, and there was a lot of silence on the chat show this week, now all of a sudden the focus is on same sex marrage and black history. The drum has stopped banging for a while.

            • Longtail says:

So true TD: unlike umok I am keenly aware that you argue against both sides of the fence instead of being a blind supporter (like umok and others). The PLP has NEVER accepted criticism in any form. STILL their members say they lost the last election because PLP supporters did not vote. No that is NOT why they lost: it was because of bad leadership and bad decisions – do not blame the electorate for fallout, blame the leaders!!!

              • Onion juice says:

No, because the fools fell for the 2000 jobs, now they’re kicking themselves in the @$$.

                • SMH says:

OJ…getting desperate now are you. How about the new auditors report that’s just come out now……no doubt you will be disgusted about that as well

    • SE Corner says:

Takbir – can you please repeat that in English?….or, in at least a language that the somewhat educated understand

    • The Truth and Nothing but the Truth says:

Pray to who ever you pray to, the PLP do NOT become Government ever again!

    • Bill says:

      You cannot be serious!

It’s the other way around. The PLP are not an option.

  14. aceboy says:

I guess Zane is being untruthful and malevolent?

    LOL @ Bean.

  15. DUMB says:

Don’t Unseat Marc Bean (DUMB) is declaring a red alert.

We require all DUMB PLP supporters to support our leader in our hour of need.

Although these are challenging times we are confident that our DUMB supporters will carry the day

    Foot and mouth.
    I give up.

  18. Gibby says:

You didn’t need to turn off Gibbs Hill LH in protest?

  19. ess ess dee says:

    Marc

Please step down. Think beyond your ego and do what’s best for the island please. You have served your time, however in terms of your leadership skills I find it very disturbing that you would purposely allow the PLP to yet again lose in the upcoming election which undoubtedly would occur if you remain at the helm. Do the right thing…”strive grow and succeed”

  20. Baygrapes says:

It’s time to bail Zane. What an amazing time to develop a conscience. Can we PLEASE delve into the Auditors report and, once and for all, expose what happened. Let’s stop pretending. The elephant has been in the room for a very long time.

Did anyone else miss the second headline on this story, Jamahl Simmons Shadow Minister of Tourism and Economic Development??? One of our most important ministries! What a joke. Please help us!!!!

  23. robert says:

Zane i am so disappointed in you…enjoy your vacation, see you when you return .

    • Ms Brows Boyz says:

Why, he was pushed out! Should he be silenced? Did he lie in his statement? Why are you disappointed exactly? I’m sure he is disappointed! He was just fired!

  24. JJ says:

The PLP the last organization, institution, group political party to never have a leader , Premier , that is not white , Portuguese or any other Bermudian Leader other than Black ! Historical fact Bermuda !

  25. Just saying says:

MR egotistical needs to be in charge! or no big projects coming up.

  26. silk says:

Good luck Mr. Simmons and dont let the above haters get in your way doing your shadow job!

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Shadow Tourism Minister. Can you imagine him as being the actual Tourism Minister?

      Frightening thought.

      • Wake up Bie says:

Did you just move to Bermuda?

Wait a minute you must have a short memory!!!!!!!! The current OBA Tourism Minister did something far more serious then anything Simmons did or said!!!

I don’t like Simmons either, but google what the last one did.

  27. Zevon says:

The PLP have been telling us malevolent lies.

  28. navin johnson says:

even the most avid and ardent PLP zealots are slowly realizing what everyone else has known from day one…..Marc Bean is totally and completely incapable of leading the party and the country…..there is nothing there..personally I hope he stays as leader …all one need do is close your eyes and imagine him in front of someone outside of Bermuda…..

  29. UmJustSaying says:

‘Make your friends before you need them’, we’ve used the phrase and heard it. If you can agree to disagree you’ll probably never need them, they are still your friends.

  30. just wondering says:

how odd!! can someone dig up last Fridays (I think it was) interview where Sane said he was happy with his position as deputy etc etc – one of these two statements of his simply isn’t true

  31. Lone Wolf says:

Well done Zane. I am proud of you. I have said it before, I will NOT vote for the PLP while Bean is the leader. And it is obvious now that I am not the only one who feels this way.

If they (PLP) want to get back behind the wheel then they MUST remove Mr. Bean. Plain and simple. If they don’t, then look for the OBA to win again at the next election.

And yes, I am a swing voter. I will vote for whichever party I feel is best at the time and I have voted for both the PLP and the UBP in the past. I didn’t vote at all in the last election but WILL vote for the OBA unless Bean is removed.
