‘Over 200 Families Affected By Gun Violence’

January 26, 2016

Crime Stoppers Bermuda is urging the public to take action, saying that “since September 2015, Bermuda has witnessed 18 confirmed firearms incidents in which one person has been shot dead and five persons have been seriously injured.”

A spokesperson said, “If you include these incidents in recent crime statistics we see that since 2009 over 200 families in Bermuda have been affected by such gun violence. This has resulted in 106 victims who have been injured or killed by these senseless gang related activities.

“Crime Stoppers Bermuda need you the Bermuda public, to report what you hear or have seen in relation to such senseless violence. There are numerous people within our community who know those involved in this destructive behavior, and we are asking you to call or email Crime Stoppers with any piece of information, no matter how small you may think it is.

“Call our confidential telephone number -800-8477 or visit our website crimestoppers.bm where you can send a completely anonymous electronic report.

“All information is received by our call takers in Miami, who will give the caller a unique reference number that will be known only to the caller, so that if someone is arrested for a gun related crime a substantial reward can be confidentially paid out to this caller.

“The Miami Crime Stoppers call takers who answer our Bermuda number, will never ask for your name or any information that can identify the caller.

“This has been the backbone of the confidential reporting system now operating in 26 countries and within Bermuda. During the last nineteen years in Bermuda, and longer than that internationally, no Crime Stoppers caller has ever been identified.”

David Carruthers, the Chairman of Crime Stoppers Bermuda, said, ‘Someone in our community is aware of what is happening. I believe we owe a duty of care to the many families who are now suffering the loss or injury of a loved one due to this gun violence and that it is now time to act. It is time to stop this madness before it effects another Bermudian family.

“Crime Stoppers Bermuda can offer a substantial reward for information that is passed through our confidential reporting lines that assists the Police in making an arrest and subsequent conviction in relation to this gun violence.

“We will ensure that, with the support of our business partners, a substantial financial reward will be given to any individual who makes this happen … and we guarantee complete confidentiality”.

Call 800-8477 or visit crimestoppers.bm for more information.

This message is for all the Mamas talking about their innocent boys, people please start telling what you know, we live in a beautiful place, but without the help of the people in the know there is little help- Unless we call the The Engish Regiment, bet they could make a clean sweep.

    • @ Ann,in reality I would like folk like you and others that think along the same line to up your game, This situation is nothing new to Bermuda and if you do proper research you can trace gun problems, gang problems, drug issues all the way back 40 years plus.

The fact that we have seen a more serious side of a wider issue, is not the issue, round up all the young black males who seem to be a problem in any of these categories and locked them all up, and they would all have replacements on the street before you can get them to jail.

I understand your concern and your passionate plea, but the real joke is we dealing with the issue from the wrong and of the gun, you all are more concerned about those who are carrying the guns and using them, The real criminals I want to see be taken down are far worse.

Let me also say to the so called, mister and misses Bermuda, ex-pats and paper Bermudians, who say if you know something say something, please do me a great favor and SHUT UP, cause those who have information will never be supported or protected by you so called folk who want to hear what they know.

I don’t contribute to Bernews just to say something, I do it because I want to be a part of the change I speak about, while other jokers want to hide behind pen names, making comments on thing’s they have no clue about.

      • Zevon says:

So you don’t want the opinions of, as you put it, “expats and paper Bermudians”.
Putting aside the fact that you’re a creep, presumably next time Tweed expresses an opinion you’ll tell him to shut his face as well, right?

      • Ann says:

Duane, I do not speak out of ignorance. What I imply is that discipline begins in the home – something men and women seem to have walked away from in Bermuda. I am a mother of 2 and both my husband and I have put a lot of hours and time in on. We know where are children are and have disciplined harshly in the past when they weren’t where they were supposed to be. I acknowledge gangs have been around for years, but in this day and age they are far more in the public eye. My wish would be that the parents of these children that are being shot at would speak to the public and tell the mistakes they have made so that others may not make the same mistakes. Children need parents to look out for them from birth, both mothers and fathers, and in my opinion they don’t! So we have reached a crisis and need help to make a clean sweep and show we are serious that this behavior is longer going to be tolerated.
I have seen the churches lately only worry about gay marriages, instead of possibly reaching out and putting there efforts into matters that are actually important

        • Onion Juice says:

So the whole island is not effected, I guess unless it happens to a certain segment its not inclusive.
It’s like if certain people are on drugs its a problem, but when it happens to other people its an epidemic.
          Mmmmm

      • know dat says:

what do you mean by “call the English regiment to do a clean sweep”?

You sound like you advocate the killing of black men in the name of your interest.

        Go home Ann.
        We dont need your help.

        • Ann says:

People read what they want to see, a clean sweep means to come in, get rid of the guns, and attempt to dissemble these gangs. We don’t seem to be doing a very good job on our own. I never said or believe what you interpreted. Oh and I am Bermudian so I am home.

          • Onion Juice says:

Clean Sweep, I wonder how long you’ve been in Bermuda.
Remember Coxell and his clean sweep, he got too close to whoever and they booted him out of here.
And England couldn’t even take care of Brixton.
            Mmmmmm

  2. NO MORE WAR says:

Wow that is totally unacceptable and needs addressing like yesterday.

  3. No says:

No, 65000 people are affected by gun violence. And it must stop.

  4. mr speaker says:

Grannies mamaa and daddys are not gonna say anything because their so called good sons or grandsons are paying the bills.

    • @ Mr Speaker, another ox that don’t know crap, and yes I can back up my stance.Do not judge every single incident or family by the limited information you think you have.

Research the families, and in case you don’t know there is enough readily available information and stats out there that can tell you just about anything you are referring to, and as a few of those who have died are directly related to me, I take a offence and tell you back up your ignorance with facts.

If you can not do that, try not say anything you can not prove or back up.

  5. Takbir Karriem Sharrieff says:

Duane P.Santucci ,you have big b@lls to use your real name and you are to be admired for that.Perhaps we can all make a start by identifying ourselves by our own pen names when making comments, but maybe we are too cowardly to do that .Maybe we are afraid of repercussions of some sort.B.A.N. Bermudians against narcotics and its organisers have identified ourselves since day one and have condemned this behaviour and their partipants. The people committing these acts know that you are cowardly b@st@rds with pen names hiding behind nom-de-plumes!Start now by identifying yourselves and your disdain for this behaviour and watch how quickly things change.Peace.

  6. Coffee says:

    Crimestoppers ?!

What we need is competent leadership from the minister of national security and his cabinet !

They had all the answers as the opposition ….

I guess the solution they had in mind was to give out the crimestoppers phone number !

    • Matthew says:

Just so you know the Governor is in charge of the police. Government makes the legislation. The police enforce the laws that are made in house. Without the co-operation of the community nothing can be done.

      • Coffee says:

While opposition the UBP/BDA/OBA made it the government of the day the sole whipping post for the killings occurring on Island . Guess what ,? You are the government now , deal with it !

  7. ghost says:

So we are going to act like we don’t know who the shooters are Lol… the shootings take place when the clock goes back…it’s darker earlier and the weather is different so seeing someone in dark clothing or wearing gloves doesn’t standout… police would realize that if they were actual police… this island is a no bigger than a neighborhood but yet it can’t be controlled… I find that hard to believe… and the police continue to make shootings easier to get away with because guys know now as long as they don’t brag about what they did they will get away with it… this country is a joke

  8. Truth is killin' me... says:

You’re all at fault. You all allow this nonsense to get out of hand and you’re all scared to do what is right! If you toughened the hell up you would see it dissipate very quickly!!

  9. john doe says:

whats sad is if they pick a man out in a line up i believe they still pick the person out in the same room. if thats the case alot of people wouldnt wanna call out names
