Smoke Issuing From American Airlines Plane

The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to the airport late this morning [May 14] following a report of smoke issuing from the rear wheels of a stationary American Airlines plane.

Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service Media Relations Officer Sergeant Russann Francis said that at 11:37am this morning, 911 Emergency Dispatch Center received a call stating there was smoke issuing from the starboard rear wheels of a stationary American Airlines passenger plane.

Sgt. Francis said, “The passenger flight having recently landed and parked at Gate 4, did not have any souls onboard. The fire was extinguished with 150 pounds of dry chemical powder prior to Fire Service arrival. Surrounding vehicles have been moved as a precautionary measure.

“Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service [BFRS] were standing by on scene with 6 vehicles and 9 personnel to ensure the fire was completely extinguished and will remain on scene to monitor the extinguished area during the natural cooling process.

“An investigation will be carried out into the cause of this incident.”
