Kevin Simmons Bermuda August 2016The Institute of Bermuda Architects [IBA] today [August 8] announces the 2016 recipients of the annual Stanley G. Kennedy [SGK] Architectural Award.

The scholarship is awarded to students enrolled in an accredited architecture program, and the recipients are selected on the basis of academic merit and presentation of design work.

Stanley G. Kennedy was an architect, former IBA president and Architects Registration Council [ARC] Chair who dedicated himself to improving professional as well as education standards in architecture; the award was presented in his name for the first time in 2004.

This year’s recipient, as selected by the IBA Education Committee, is Kevin Simmons. He will receive a $8,000 scholarship for this coming school year.

Mr. Simmons will be entering his second and final year of the Master of Architecture programme at Oxford Brookes University in Oxford, England this fall. The Committee was impressed with Mr. Simmons’ design portfolio, excellent grades and overall commitment to his studies.

Krystal Rodrigues, President, IBA, says: “The IBA is committed to investing in aspiring architects, and this award, and the mentor after whom it is named, embody this commitment. We are pleased to be able to support this outstanding student.”

Julia van Beelen, Education Committee Chair says: “Most of us in the architecture profession have benefitted from funding, professional mentors and other support within the community; we understand first-hand the value of investing in aspiring young architects.

“On behalf of the IBA, the Education committee is pleased to present Kevin with this award. We congratulate him on his accomplishments, and wish him the best of luck in his continued studies and future career.”
