Lightning Strikes Causes Damage At Airport
The Air Traffic Control Tower and the Long Range Radar at the airport suffered damage from lightning strikes during the thunderstorm yesterday, the government confirmed today.
A spokesperson said, “During the severe thunderstorm activity yesterday [August 24, 2016], the Air Traffic Control Tower and the Long Range Radar at the L.F. Wade International Airport suffered lightning strikes that resulted in some systems damage.
“The Control Tower was minimally impacted, but the damage to the radar has resulted in a loss of operation.
A lightning bolt seen in the east end earlier this week:
“Airport technicians assessed the damage and have ordered the necessary replacement parts which are expected to arrive on-Island by the weekend.
“The Department of Airport Operations expects the repairs to be completed soon thereafter, with a return to service expected sometime next week.
“While the radar is out of service, the Airport will have in place standard non-radar operating procedures which call for greater time separation between departing flights.
“This will not impact arriving flights, however, flights scheduled to depart in the afternoon, may experience minor delays.”
No backup?
Oh yeah of course. There used to be a backup when the PLP were in charge but it gor dismantled the minute the OBA got in.
So it must be the OBS’s fault, because the PLP saw this coming and had backups for everything at all times.
Idiot.
Give it a break will you…
Who are you talking to? the morons complaining about no backup?
First de weather radar, now this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Musta bin de OBA. huh juice…
Like P.L.P. was de cause for de World recession.
LMFAO
not the world’s, just Bermuda’s.
Ah. The PLP ‘we were caught up in a world recession’ myth.
The rest of the world either never went into recession (in some cases) or came out of it in 15 months or so (in most cases).
Bermuda was in economic recession for seven disastrous years. Including several years of Paula Cox promising we were ‘just about to turn the corner’. Utter incompetence.
You have no idea what youre talking about.
Just looks like some well-known facts to me.
Prove him wrong with facts, if you can. If you can’t, it looks like you lose.
again and again, de lightening rods aint working
Lightning detection and warning system for the main apron has been non-operational for several months. In fact, it doesn’t even exist anymore.
Not so fast on that.
Better build a new airport…. lol…
I find it hard to believe, but then again, I don’t. How could an important air traffic control tower and system not have a properly grounded lightning arresting system? If indeed the airport is to FAA standards how can this happen? I forgot, what a dummy I am, this is Bermuda where crap falls apart until the crap hits the fan. We are truly a third world country when it comes to important infrastructure.
The OBA will do anything to get this airport built LOL
I find this very disconcerting that the airport does not carry platinum spare parts for its critical systems. No other business would be allowed to operate like this.
Please have some Idea of what you are yapping about ??
