Olympics: Pimentel & Wollmann Make Debut
[Written by Don Burgess]
Sailor Ceci Wollmann said making her Olympic debut was “exciting” as she faced off against the best sailors in the world.
Wollmann, who is just 18, finished 33rd in the first race of the 37 strong women’s laser radial fleet. That race was won by Ireland’s Annalise Murphy. The second race saw Wollmann improve to 29th as Gintare Scheidt of Lithuania carried home the victory. Overall, Wollmann is 33rd on 62 points
She told Bernews she felt both excited and anxious as this is her first Olympics. “That being said, after training for a week here, I felt quite comfortable in the boat.”
Wollmann added: “I am quite happy after today. It was tricky conditions — the windy was shifty and gusty — and I believe I had some good moments like the starts. Now that the first races are done, I feel more settled and confident in myself that I can compete against the best in the world.”
Fellow Bermudian Cameron Pimentel also made his Olympic debut today in the men’s laser fleet.
Pimental sailed in the men’s laser fleet which has 46 competitors. He was 31st in his first race, and 45th in the second. Overall Pimentel is 39th.
Two more races are scheduled for Tuesday.
