Live Video Replay: Labour Day Banquet Speech
[Updated] The Bermuda Industrial Union [BIU] is hosting their annual Labour Day Banquet this evening [Sept 2], with BIU President Chris Furbert serving as the guest speaker, marking the first time in the 35 year history of the banquet that a BIU President served as the keynote speaker at the event.
In addition to the Banquet, other events scheduled for this year’s Labour Day celebrations the Pre-Labour Day Gathering at Shelly Bay Beach on Sunday afternoon [Sept 4], and the annual Labour Day Race and Walk and Labour Day March on Monday [Sept 5].
On Monday, the race and walk will kick off at 8:30am from BIU Headquarters, and the Labour Day March will also start at BIU Headquarters, and is set to get underway at 11:30am after Labour Day Greetings have been shared by various trade union leaders.
Update: 42-minute live video replay of Mr Furbert’s speech:
Embarrassing how bad a speech this was just in terms of delivery, let alone the steaming pile of garbage that was its content.
Embarrassing that white people STILL earn a higher wage % then Black people with a 4 hundred year economic and social advantage and foreign employment is at 0%.
LMFAO
Please find one company that pays its black employees who have identical qualifications , seniority and work performance LESS than their white employees .
You do know that companies have to report this data to government , don’t you ?
Trying to compare different companies to each other or unlike jobs is redundant and akin to the old apples and oranges .
No, what’s embarrassing is your lack of basic language skills.
You do realize foreign unemployment will always be that right? If they are unemployed, they are not on a work permit which means they have to leave the island.
Well when one of Bermuda’s black leaders stands up and talks about finance but does not know the difference between profit amd revenue, assets and liabilities- it makes you wonder!?
The TRUTH is an offence but not a sin.
Correction
Foreign employment at 100%.
Doing the same job with the same experience and attitude to better themselves gets equal pay. White people earn less than their black colleagues if they fall short of them too.
Look a little deeper. What else might that statistic be telling you?
Really because I know a ton of black folks that earn a whole lot more than me and my wife put together so I don’t see where that tone of speech is coming from.
how about ditching the anti-intellectual culture. The idea that spelling things correctly is ‘acting white’, for example.
You didn’t really expect anything different did you? You just have to lower your expectations A LOT MORE then nothing you hear out of this bunch will surprise you.
What’s really embarrassing is that the 2017 December election will come down to white voters on one side and black voters on the other. We have 2 Bermudas and the UBP is failing to admit this.
The UBP prefer to run away from the problem and change their name to OBA. Changing the name will not work anymore and you have the nerve to call the PLP voters racist.
Whats really embarrassing is the % of Blacks that vote U.B.P. heavily out numbers the % of whites that vote P.L.P.
Talk about psychological damage.
Similarly, black people generally don’t become members of the kkk.
People vote with who they think is beast suited to run the country. If they don’t then they are destroying theirs and their childrens future.
@hmmm…a Point O.J will NEVER understand…. smart voters vote for the best party for their future at the time….too many people following political parties like it’s their Cup Match team….Bermuda’s future is NO game…
“Whats really embarrassing is the % of Blacks that vote U.B.P. heavily out numbers the % of whites that vote P.L.P.
Talk about psychological damage.”….
NO…THE ABOVE STATEMENT IS EMBARRASSING….
Great speech, great introduction, great turnout, great food and hospitality. Finally it would appear that some politicians and labour leaders agree that there has to be a concerted effort for Unions,Government,Opposition, need to pull together for Bermuda to go forward.Mr Furbert made one very salient Point that resonated.Power of the people lies in their Power to vote.take note young folks Peace.
Broke?
What ever happened you union square grocery. Seriously….you got shelves innit…you got refrigeration innit…you got many things innit…but ain’t gots no food innit…..deyz cash registahz…..and no cash dem…why not?
A grocery store is a money train!
Because as people most of us still are psychologically F!@#ed up in de head from centuries of misinformation that we cant do buisness with each other and de man’s ice is colder, but we’re making progress.
It took a few centuries to create the problem, so it’s not an over night fix.
Yup….kids…you do have a vote…please vote for full grocery stores!
Wow! profit amd revenue are the same thing, both residing on the balance sheet but in order to ‘cook’ the books like Enron the govt has concealed liabilities through a PPP? Is the aiport an asset or liability if it turns over 20m profit according to the BIU geniuses?
According to the 2016/17 budget the airport is projected to have an expediture of $19.3 million and direct revenue of $10.8 million. It will also have another $43 million of passenger tax revenue. That’s a difference of $34.7 million in revenue over expenses (pretty much the definition of profit). Look up the numbers for yourself if you’re dubious.
Did you forget the part where they are putting out the money to build the airport?? You guys act like the day they sign the contract they start making a profit at Bermuda’s expense and we get nothing out of it.
1. They pay out 250m plus to build the airport.
2. During that 3year plus period, the profit they make is $0 or more likely -$10m or more (as the airport currently runs at a loss)
3. When they start making a profit, they are paying BACK that 250m plus (and the deficit noted before).
4. Once that debt is paid off and we are talking pure profit, they split that profit 50/50 with Bermuda.
They make more, we make more and we dont have to be 100s of millions of dollars in debt. Explain to me again how the PLP would have done this so much better??
Do you not know how the world (economics; money) works?
It’s called an investment, dummy. You put money in then reap the rewards (over time)
Jesus. We really do need to (invest) on public education
Three minutes in and I had to turn it off
Typical moronic rant – better check his short-term memory cause it wasn’t the ruling party that dragged us into the Third World.
what really worries me is that the wealth of knowledge and physical wealth that goes to this banquet – year in and year out never equates to any real POWER brokering that seems to result in business ventures for a greater multitude of the demographic that is represented.
why do i never hear of these speeches that there will be an announcement that certain segments of the business community have banded together to form a corporation that mirrors/betters those that currently exist (no specific industry) in order to generate a micro-economy within an already existing/recovering economy that will uplift the all too often “downtrodden”, “less fortunate”, “less opportuned” instead of a war cry for protests – delivered in an all too familiar overtly aggressive tone, postulated with physical strength that is void of any substantial fiscal plan or otherwise.
i get bored to tears of these flower shows/photo-ops and wish to see some galvanization of Bermuda in general and the demographic represented at these banquets in particular………
as usual – wondering
David Burch looks so handsome wow I mean wow
Sorry I meant Burt
Did You?
