BELCO: Safety Notice To Prepare For Hurricane
“As you prepare for the arrival of Hurricane Nicole safeguard your valuable appliances and sensitive equipment by unplugging them when winds increase and throughout the storm,” BELCO said today.
“Trees hitting power lines and flying debris can cause surges on the electricity system and damage equipment. Should you lose power during the storm, keep your appliances disconnected.
“When power is restored ensure that your power supply is stable before reconnecting sensitive equipment and bring appliances back-up gradually as undetected damage to the system can result in partial power that can also cause damage.
Weather conditions at 3pm this afternoon as Nicole approaches:
“If you have a generator, operate it in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. Check that it is properly connected and isolated from BELCO’s network to ensure your safety and the safety of BELCO line crews. Always only operate a generator outdoors.
“Throughout the storm, the BELCO network is monitored by Grid Operations and engineers are aware of outages affecting major circuits and large areas. As it is unsafe for BELCO crews to respond to outages during the storm, we ask customers to please refrain from calling 955 as it is important to leave lines open for emergency communications.
“Once the storm has passed BELCO will assess the damage to the system and begin repairs to bring back as many circuits as quickly as possible. Priority is given to essential services and major circuits where the largest numbers of people can be restored, quickly. Throughout the storm, BELCO will be providing updates via Facebook, Twitter and the local media.”
