BFRS To Host Annual Caribbean Fire Conference
The Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service [BFRS] will be hosting the annual conference for the Caribbean Association of Fire Chiefs at the Fairmont Southampton from November 28th to December 2nd, with Fire Chiefs from Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Guadeloupe, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, Sint Maarten, St. Vincent, St. Croix, St. Thomas and Saba expected to attend.
The BFRS said, “The Caribbean Association of Fire Chiefs [CAFC] is a regional organization comprised of Caribbean Fire Service Administrators, Chiefs and Fire Officers from countries within the Caribbean.
“CAFC’s inauguration ceremony was held on September 17, 2001 in Trinidad and Tobago under the auspices of Prime Minister Basdeo Panday.
“Their primary objective is to prevent and minimize the loss of life, personal injury, damage to property and the environment by improving and promoting the best quality of firefighting, rescue, fire protection and fire prevention.
“The annual conference supports the largest gathering of Fire-Rescue and EMS personnel in the Caribbean.
“The Fire Chiefs gather to learn and share ideas pertaining to strategic management, enhancing emergency medical services, disaster response management, incident command competencies and officer development.
“Junior Officers will also attend and participate in the Junior Officer Leadership Academy program which is delivered by Dr. Byron Kennedy of the Atlanta Fire and Rescue Service.
“The conference will also be hosting a number of major vendors of fire service firefighting equipment from the United States, Canada, the Caribbean and United Kingdom. The vendors will be allowed to showcase their wares in an attempt to sell the various Chief Fire Officers on their products.
“Local Chief Fire Officer, Chief Reginald L. Burchall, has been serving as Vice President to the association for the past 3 years. Chief Burchall welcomes the opportunity to host the annual conference and deems it a privilege to be able to showcase Bermuda and its Fire Service Organization.
“The conference will conclude on Friday, December 2nd, with a Firefighters Challenge during which firefighters from Bermuda and overseas will compete in a challenge pitting their skills learned as firefighters against one another to determine who is considered the ‘best of the best’ in the Caribbean.”
