Under the World Cancer theme of “we can, I can” this year, Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre [BCHC] is encouraging everyone in Bermuda to be more active in the fight against a disease that directly affects at least 300 people on the island yearly.

“This World Cancer day, we want to encourage individuals to play an active role in the fight against cancer. With an overwhelming 312 cases of cancer being diagnosed in Bermuda in 2015, there is a lot we can be doing to help raise awareness and prevent the occurrence of this disease,” said Tara Curtis, Executive Director at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre.

“Helping to cure cancer is also a commitment of our Centre and, with the soon open new Radiation Therapy Centre, we will be able to provide more comprehensive cancer care at home.”

A spokesperson said, “The Centre is using their voice to reach Bermuda’s youth and their parents to help raise awareness of the impact cancer has on our island. Everyone in Bermuda can contribute to the success of World Cancer Day, a global day of awareness.

“With more than a third of all cancers preventable through lifestyle interventions, we encourage individuals to take responsibility for reducing their own cancer risk. Simple measures such as stopping smoking, eating less red and processed meat, exercising regularly and reducing alcohol consumption can extend a healthy life.”
