April 3, 2017

The Bermuda Industrial Union [BIU] has called an “Urgent Meeting” for all BIU members at 4.00pm on Tuesday [April 4] in relation to the court summonses served on Union executives and members.

This follows after several BIU members received summonses from Magistrate’s Court, with the summonses understood to be in relation to the protest on December 2, 2016.

The BIU’s announcement said, “Urgent Meeting for all BIU Members Tuesday April 4, 2017 at BIU Headquarters 4:00pm. Agenda: Court Summons Served on Union Executives and Members. By Request of Bro. Louis Sommer, 2nd. Vice President.”

  1. wahoo says:

Shouldn’t the agenda also read and discussion of financial statements for the years 1999-2017?

    • Transparency not = ubp/OBA says:

No the agenda will be the OBA has 8 months left so what name will the UBP use next!

      • wahoo says:

That sounds political not industrial. Since you bring it up the OBA have another two or three terms based on the ineffective opposition.

Whatever the twenty (20) of you decide you should ask about how your dues are being spent. Me, I would be investing the $98.50 each month.

        • Onion Juice says:

Dues also include, sick days, vacation days, Holiday pay, maternity leave, paternity leave, overtime, compasionate leave, Regiment duties, etc, etc.
Not bad for $98.50 a month.

          • Zevon says:

I don’t think we’ve forgotten the 70 sick days and 32 vacation days, carry forward what you don’t use. That’s what keeps Bermuda in debt and keeps our grandchildren in financial slavery, paying for all that sh..t.

        • Jus' Wonderin' says:

$98.50 a month?! LMFAO….what is the money being spent on?!

      • TRUTHSPEAKS says:

        I love it !!

      • Zevon says:

So the PLP is hoping to get elected by promising not to enforce laws equally to everybody. Is that it?
Kind of like Hitler prior to WW2. Laws apply to some people but not others.

        • Onion Juice says:

You dont want to mention about laws equally enforced to everybody. For de last 400 years, we have been on de short end of de stick.
Reminds me when OJ was aquitted and a certain segment of society were in a uproar.
Meanwhile we have been murdered, raped and lynched for centuries with no immidiate indictment.
          Just de irony.

          • uiq says:

What do you mean “we”, kemosabe?

For a murdered, raped and lynched person you have an awful lot of free time to whinge about round numbers on the internet.

          • bdaboy says:

“. For de last 400 years, we have been on de short end of de stick.”

            You’re claiming that you’re 400 years old?
You’ve never worked a day in your life…cut the crap.

          • Zevon says:

So you do want laws enforced sometimes, but not when they apply to you. Got it.

      • steva says:

        Moron

        • steve says:

Steva, are you my long lost sister? The brevity of your reply says we are one!!

      • puzzled says:

Well; all I can say is with attitudes displayed here over the past few weeks Bermuda is doomed once the koolaide is drunk during America’s Cup.

        F+(8in mind altered fools.

        Looks like Betty Trump wins

    • King Jammys says:

My muney is up de kredituyun since 99 prograssin like still!

  2. Hater Watching says:

Come out!!! Come out all you where ever you are ALL you hate filled thinkers: wahoo, Nanny Ppat, Pat, Joe Boggs, puzzeled, Chanz, steve, trump supporter & Zevon….this time please change the narrative a bit, as it is boring reading the same narrative!!!!!!

    • truth says:

Yeah because the truth is something we just change to keep things fresh right?

    • wahoo says:

      See above.

When you go to the meeting ask some tricky questions if you are at all concerned about how your dues are/have been spent. Ask why legal defense should be sponsored by charitable donations.

Ask yourself why you call people haters just because they do not hold the same views as you.

Say hello to Onion Juice and Laverne and tell CF I said “hey”.

      I love you.

      • Humphrey says:

Now u want to help u pay for breaking the law smh never again get a vote from me.

    • steve says:

@ hater watching- I agree i can be a little negative at times.
In fact I hate the way the word “Narrative” is so overused. Is there no hope for me?

    • Zevon says:

Laws don’t apply to union people then? You’re above all that are you? Too important? Too entitlled?

      • Onion Juice says:

So a white collar crime and blue collar crime are different?

        • Zevon says:

No one is protesting to say that people who do white collar crime should be let off.
You’re the ones who think laws don’t apply to you.

    • trump supporter says:

On my way, just stopping at the ATM first. Need monies to make a donation for a lawyer to defend people breaking the law.

    • Joe Bloggs says:

Hello. Why am I a “hate filled thinker” please?

    • mark says:

Amen! Come out and ask your leaders where our dues went! Well said! They are aligning with the trump/plp people and we need to stop this!

  3. We must stand together and eradicate the monster in our midst.

    • Izzypop says:

      Yeah. The union boss.

      • Onion Juice says:

Just imagine if we didnt have a Union?
Well we see how much de nannies get paid and what they have to do.
Even though slavery is LEGALLY over, de mindset……….

        • bdaboy says:

“Just imagine if we didnt have a Union?”

yes, then skilless sociopaths like oj would never have a job

    • Ringmaster says:

Why would you refer to the BIU like that?

    • hmmm says:

You voting out Chris ??? power gone to the man’s head.

    • steva says:

      The PLP?

    • mark says:

      Amen. Vote furbert out!

  4. Nanny Pat says:

Hmmm, 4:00 on a weekday. Interesting timing.

    • VJ says:

No matter what time it was, you would still be complaining!!

    • The Wouble You says:

it amazes me that the membership of this group continues to pour money into the BIU without knowing where it is going , or to who it is going to. The membership gets nothing whwn they strike , no new construction or renovations. I got out 10+ years ago when switching jobs. Its like playing Texas Hold’em Poker with your money. Strange tging is that in some partsbof the woeld this would be called a Pyramid Scheme.

    • wahoo says:

      5 o’clock happy hour.

    • whatever says:

      … but not surprising.

  5. Truth is killin' me... says:

If you didn’t go doing a pack you wouldn’t be getting summonses and court appearances!!

  6. Shawn says:

I’m confused. Is the BIU now an political party, because most of their meeting recently have nothing to do with labour issues, only political ones?

    • Smh says:

A certain segment use businesses and corporations as their political bases so YES! The union is all some of us have!!

      • Onion Juice says:

Who do you think de Chamber of Commerce support?
        Mmmmm

      • the real Tery says:

Then Smh you are in deep doo doo

      • Humphrey says:

Ya but the union is s corporate Bermuda to do do their business ask Chris whhlere does he keep his ,I’ll bet its not at the credit union. When will u wake up people n stop being used

      • mark says:

Are you serious?! Lol. Everyone knows the biu is a eing of the plp/trump agenda. Their members are even realizing this. Thats why theyre not showing up!

    • Cedar Stump says:

Not all PLP are BIU but ALL BIU are PLP.

      • Onion Juice says:

Not really, I know some BIU voted OBA and are now kicking themselves in de @$$. Thats why as a people some of us are brain damaged, while de other segment are loyal to their vote.

    • Earth watch police says:

I’m confused are they going to refute the video evidence

      • Hmmm says:

Their not, they will just stamp their feet and scream, and hope it all goes away.. Just as the BIU always does..

    • Onion Juice says:

If you Dreamers knew your History, de P.L.P. came out of de Labour movement during de times of Racial Injustice.
Mmmmmm. De more things change they remain de same.

  7. A Chap called Vanz says:

    Popcorn time!

  8. Janice says:

If they bang all their heads together and come up with a working brain maybe the could get their financial books in order for all to see??! Still waiting

    • Onion Juice says:

How about de financial books on de airport?
      Mmmmmm

      • bdaboy says:

“How about de financial books on de airport?”

what about them? They’re available for anyone to read…if you can read.

  9. Up D hill says:

So Bro Louis Somner, PLEASE tell the people ( not just your people) all Bermuda people, what this has to do with labor?

  10. Ellie J says:

Neither unions nor any persons have the right to interfere with the judiciary process. I hope that any discussion at the meeting will have legal consults about any possible union actions.

  11. James H says:

Very interesting this. Will they bring the island down and insist that these alleged law breakers be let off en masse? Is this another case of Bermudians thinking they are special? Popcorn anyone?

  12. JJ says:

    What about public transportation?

    • Family Man says:

Time to privatise the buses and ferries.

      • Silence Do Good says:

Government is only selling off (privatizing via quangos first) profitable sections. Departments or services that lose money they can’t give away because no one want to inherit the unions with their downing tools and work to rule attitudes over political issues.

I encourage our brothers and sister to attend today’s meeting and if it has nothing to do with labor ask for the union’s senior executives resignation. This is a total waste of labor productivity and individuals time further hurting and dividing our country where we all have to exist.

    • Zevon says:

It’s mainly to disrupt kids going home from government schools. The BIU don’t care about them.

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Who cares what the public needs? BIU needs come first. Always.

  13. Micha says:

BIU is a joke. It’s a union to promote people from working hard under high standards.

  14. hmmm says:

I’m confused is this a union matter or is it the Peoples campaign.

Chris is blurring the lines and ABUSING his position in the BIU again.

Go to the meeting , demand a vote of no confidence in Chris … ALSO ASK HIM WHERE THE FINANCIALS ARE SINCE 2009.

  15. hmmm says:

I wonder if they will ask for money at this meeting?????

  16. cpm says:

Why not have a meeting about people breaking the law and blocking access to parliament after 5:00pm to minimise public transport disruption.

  17. Family Man says:

I’m thinking we should all block access to the BIU headquarters tomorrow afternoon. You know, as a peaceful protest against the support of illegal work stoppages.

  18. Common Sense says:

It is the Director of Public Prosecutions who makes the decision on who to prosecute, and not any politicians. Last time I heard, he had no connections with the OBA.

    • Zevon says:

In fact, he was first appointed by the PLP.

    • Joe Bloggs says:

The current DPP is Larry Musenden, a former PLP Senator and a former Attorney-General under the PLP Government.

    • just wondering says:

The current DPP is in fact a former Attorney General and wasn’t he appointed as AG under the PLP government?? This is a fact

  19. Brainiac says:

are they afraid of something like GUILT??????????if not appear and state your case not that they have one. Instigators of it all

  20. drunken ursula says:

will there be any public transportation services ?????

  21. San George says:

Chris – save this for May and June.

  22. Ripleys says:

So public schools are the only ones in at the moment and they pick 4pm to hold a meeting. Isn’t that peak time? Who makes these stupid decisions, hurting the people who need the help the most. Twits

    • Zevon says:

Well yes. It’s because they don’t care.

    • Triangle Drifter says:

The last thing the union leadership wants is an educated future membership.

    • sandgrownan says:

The BIU isn’t exactly known for it’s smarts.

And remember, it’s not about worker’s rights, or about “helping people”, it’s about political power.

    • Humphrey says:

Yup that’s biu disrupt everything n everyone else don’t worry plp will back up n expect you to vote for them.

    • Fisherman says:

Who the heck would dislike a remark wherein someone is concerned about the children of Bermuda getting home on time or to their after-school curriculum activities or to their parents/grandparents or other safely and on time. And their parents from getting to nurseries and other venues to pick up their children and other activities. Putting our children at risk walking the streets, family having to pay taxi fare and all the rest. So very glad that my husband is no longer a member of the BIU.

  23. Have Some Backbones says:

I agree they should hold off and call strikes in June. That way the whole world will know how important and special Bermudians are. It’ll show those pesky foreigners who is boss. They can leave and take their money with them. Who needs it? After all, Bermudians are special. They say good morning. Who needs foreigners or money and stuff like that. This is Bermudas chance to show the world we don’t want foreigners here and only people who look like us. All

    • bdaboy says:

“How about de financial books on de airport?”

what about them? They’re available for anyone to read…if you can read.

    • bdaboy says:

” Who needs it? After all, Bermudians are special.”

      yeah, we have pink sand!

  24. Curious says:

It is my understanding that everyone standing in front of the gates last December were simply creating and showing a demonstration of solidarity. That being the case, going to magistrate’s court should only be to show and prove one’s innocence. What’s the problem here?

  25. Really? says:

Mega ship in Dockyard today leaving scheduled to leave at 6pm.

These visitors won’t be getting back to their ship on public transport this PM. Selfish, selfish, selfish.

  26. aceboy says:

So more politics and nothing to do with workers rights. Drag workers out of work to try and intimidate their way out of the summonses. There’s no money to fund any defenses. It all got sucked up by management salaries and benefits. The union members need a union to protect them and their fees from union management.

  27. Seascape says:

Once again, BIU members do not get paid while BIU executive continue to do so. SMH!!!

  28. Southampton says:

The BIU and its members seem to think they are above the law.
Chris Furbert is on a personal crusade anyway.
Maybe he should be appointed the King of Bermuda and all BIU members be appointed his Court Jesters.

  29. Good Stuff says:

Just called PTB Dispatch. There’s meant to be NO interruption to public transport services. School buses will run as normal.

    Hopefully this helps.

  30. Just want to know says:

Simple question… are the buses running or not for school kids this afternoon?

  31. Cow Polly says:

Hopefully the membership will deem this a non-Union matter and not show up as they did before.

  32. Rasta says:

I am going to watch premiership football.

  33. I am only concerned about
    1. How are the children getting from school? You could have made the meeting for 12pm. But hey the children are not important to the BIU.
    2. How are the parents supposed to get home to the children you have already abandoned at school?

I’ m not taking anybody else’s side but the children’s. They are the future of this island and I can tell you that THEY ARE NOT HAPPY. THEY FEEL LIKE YOU DON’T CARE ABOUT THEIR EDUCATION OR THEM FOR THAT MATTER.

Wake up your only holding the children back from being better then we are! BIU members please think about them and STOP PUTTING YOURSELVES FIRST.

THE CHILDREN ARE WATCHING AND LEARNING FROM YOU.

  34. mm says:

The issue is whether or not people engaged in an unlawful activity. Sometimes it does not take much to move from a peaceful assembly to a group of persons blocking entry of individuals needing to conduct business. I thought the gathering in March 2016, on the grounds of the House of Assembly protesting the proposed Pathways to Status legislation was one of intrigue, suspense and truly lots of genuine concern by many working people. And another word or phrase for working people is labour..Is the airport redevelopment project an issue for the people of Bermuda….yes when tons of taxpayers money of this generation and future generations are going into te project. When a number of jobs may go to folks on work permits, when there is on the surface no vetting process. So yes there is possibly a thin line between a peaceful assembly and a few loud and jeering people that are capable of unruly acts.

  35. Y-Gurl says:

Why are BIU members being called to a meeting that’s not union business, the summonses were issued for a civil breach nothing to do with either the union or their employers, politics, church and unions the lines are blurred

  36. Concerned says:

Today, the crosses upon which posters were attached – does that represent Church and State – Rev Tweed was walking in front of the protestors – pahleez
