Bermuda’s Top 50 Twitter List For July 2017

‘Fake news’ was a big issue in the last US general election. According to the Washington Post, Twitter is looking at adding a feature that would let users notify the company about “tweets that contain misleading, false or harmful information.”

It probably won’t happen before the Bermuda general election, but we could certainly use it. Already there is an account mocking one prominent Bermudian politician with disgusting and vile tweets. That’s an account that would definitely be flagged and probably removed.

America’s Cup

They say all boats rise with the tide and that was mostly true with the America’s Cup Twitter accounts. The official account AC account @AmericasCup added 26,000 followers for the event going from 101,000 to 127,000.

The team accounts that had made Bermuda home before last year — Oracle Team USA [@OracleTeamUSA], Artemis Racing [@Artemisracing] and SoftBank Team Japan [@SoftBankTeamJPN] all saw thousands of followers added to their accounts over the past three months.

Official AC sponosors that were on the list — The Hamilton Princess [@PrincessBermuda] and Gosling’s Rum [@TheBlackSeal] had modest increases of a couple of hundred, but did benefit from added exposure.

The surge of the AC accounts also helped create movement in the Bermuda Top 50 Twitter list. The America’s Cup regained third spot from Don Burgess while Softbank Team Japan jumped nine spots into 42nd.

Christian apologist Ledrew Fox swapped places with reggae star Collie Buddz in the top 10.

World reigning triathlete champion Flora Duffy continues to gain fans as she moves from 30th to 27th.

Next quarter’s rankings could see a major shakeup as the AC departs Bermuda and depending on where the three teams decide to home base for the next campaign. Standing just outside the Top 50 and could make it on the list is author Cathy West, Jennie Doidge, Reuters journalist Emma Farge and PowerGirl Trina.
