Feasibility Study For New Swing Bridge Started

August 16, 2017

The Ministry recently completed strengthening work which will extend the life of the Swing Bridge in the east end “for at least 5 years but the swing span remains inoperable,” the Ministry said, adding that the “feasibility study for a new bridge has already started and it is the Ministry’s intention to present the new bridge design in the coming months.”

In response to queries, the Ministry told Bernews, “The Ministry recently completed strengthening work to both the central swing span and the northern and southern approach spans which enabled the load rating will be reinstated to the standard loads [10 tons axle loads, GVW of 29 tons]. This strengthening work will extended the life of the bridge for at least 5 years but the swing span remains inoperable.

“The feasibility study for a new bridge has already started and it is the ministry’s intention to present the new bridge design in the coming months, with the aim for plans and specification to be completed by the end of year 2018.

“Three options will be presented within the feasibility study. The choice of the final concept should be completed by the end of 2017.”

  1. Why not a modular solution?
whatever you decide re instate zinc placement as needed… where needed… the constant movement of water electrifies through electrolosys and eats steel.

“the constant movement of water electrifies through electrolosys and eats steel.”

Take a high school science course…or don’t post, you’re embarrassing yourself.

    watching

  3. Triangle Drifter says:

Let us hope that this one will see more progress than the causeway replacement, promised ever since Fabian in 2003.

  4. Zevon says:

    Here come the F&F deals.

    • ramblings says:

      Late and over budget…

    • inna says:

Which is fine, just make sure the job gets done on time and on budget, and to spec!!!!

  5. Rocky5 says:

Sorry St. Georges – no new bridge. PLP won’t. Look a Bailey bridge they installed on Causeway…

  6. ConcernedBermudian says:

Can we perhaps look at the causeway bridge and the swing bridge and combine the costs? It would be great to have boat access through both….for larger vessels.

  7. rene says:

Wonder what it would cost to dig a tunnel ie:Lincoln Tunnel

    • PBanks says:

That would be a lot of excavation work for a 200m stretch.

    • Bermy says:

Unless they do a cut and cover type tunnel (like the London tube) it would be way to cost prohibitive for such a small span and then they would have to look at somehow paying for it (tolls) on top of that the disruption to traffic and residents would be extreme. Great idea if money was no object, would be great to see one from Dockyard to Point too.

    • fu says:

Since when does the plp care about cost?

  8. Carnival says:

Tunnel – exorbitant cost, plus insufficient distance available for down and up ramps
Causeway – doesn’t need to be a bridge, plus exorbitant costs given the caves below, but Longbird Bridge should be looked at to provide access to Castle Harbour

  9. Wingnut says:

Look out for the tolls, they be coming with income tax to boot. Spend, spend.

  10. Time Shall Tell says:

So the government is trying to do something positive & all some people have time to do is try & flip it into something negative.

    • Zevon says:

We’ve all been watching that happen for the past 4 1/2 years.

    • Politricks says:

I guess the more things change the more they stay the same huh?

I remember when the OBA changed the law so that criminal proceeds confiscated could be given to local charities, sports clubs and other such organisations.

Despite this positive act, they were criticised by the usual talking heads.

“So the government is trying to do something positive & all some people have time to do is try & flip it into something negative.”

Yes, the plp and its followers taught us well.

Solution = Macro-Scan existing bridge and build copy-replacement using Nano-Fibre Technology and Additive Manufacturing (aka 3D printing)

  12. Neil B. Formee says:

    Put a higher bridge.

  13. costa S says:

Put it out to tender fairly, look for adjustable modular system measured here ,built overseas, assembled here…. Try Holland… Or…? Denmark…

  14. Jimmy Mac says:

Sink piles into the sea bed to keep this bridge up a few more years.

  15. Holden m says:

ok… so… presently you have a bridge designed to swing both ways…. how bout a little up and down…?
