‘Steps To Replace St George’s Swing Bridge’

The Ministry of Public Works said they are “taking decisive steps to replace the ageing St George’s Swing Bridge.”

“We have been working with these plans since 2017, after inheriting the initial designs from the previous administration,” stated Minister of Public Works David Burch.

A Government spokesperson said, “The Ministry of Public Works is taking decisive steps to replace the ageing St George’s Swing Bridge, ensuring a long-term solution for residents and motorists.

“While substantive repairs to the existing bridge are being carried out this year, the ultimate goal is to construct a brand-new bridge alongside it.

“The replacement bridge, which has been in the planning phase since 2016, has now reached a stage where construction must move forward.

“Minister Burch confirmed that $5 million has been requested in the next fiscal budget to advance the preliminary work, including finalising designs and preparing for public tender.”

“Over the years, we have carried out work to extend the lifespan of the existing Swing Bridge, but we are now at a point where we must move ahead with the replacement,” the Minister explained.

“The new bridge will be erected adjacent to the existing one [on the eastern side]“, the Minister said. “This is a complex process, and we estimate it will take around three years to complete, barring unforeseen circumstances. Once finished, the transition to the new bridge will happen overnight, and the existing Swing Bridge will be dismantled.”

The Government spokesperson said, “The Government has engaged with St George’s community throughout the process, ensuring that public input is considered in the design.”

“We consulted residents on the type of bridge that will be built, and their feedback has been taken into account,” the Minister stated. “We now have local expertise within the Ministry, thanks to a Bermudian engineer who trained abroad specifically for this project. While he is no longer an employee with us, we remain in close contact with him”.

The Government spokesperson said, “Securing land rights has been a key development in advancing the construction of the new bridge.

“The Minister confirmed that the Bermuda National Trust [BNT] and the Government have successfully negotiated the purchase of land on the St George’s side, where the new structure will come ashore.”

“We have been working with these plans since 2017, after inheriting the initial designs from the previous administration,” stated Minister of Public Works David Burch.”

That implies that the previous PLP Government had no plan to deal with the Swing Bridge.

Ah there is an election coming up. This PLP Government and Col are both jokes. This bridge and the Causeway bridge should have been replaced years and years ago. If we don’t have the money, then approach the Chinese and if you do that the USA will come rushing in to build them for free.

St.Georges gets attention …buying votes or at least trying . PLP dont care about us in the East End , another Bandaid on a major infrastructure. Did you seen the holes in the hollow rib supporting the bridge and to think Island Constructions massive trucks transporting Sand across we are lucky it hasnt collapsed as well as the 2 Bailey Bridges connecting the causeway. PLP were given 12 Million to replace Longbird Bridge by the US where did that go …probably with the 10 million the US gave to clean up Morgans Point ….one thing is for sure if they get elected again start wearing a life jacket driving out of and into St. Geo

The PLP is very loose with truth. Fact is, it was DrEB who, with his usual fanfare, announced the replacement of both the Swing Bridge and Causeway more than 15 years ago. Lots of talk, maybe a picture or two, but at the end, NOTHING.

Since the Throne Speech of 2017 Burt has been telling us that work on replacing the bridge is about to start. NOTHING. More bandaids. Thats all.

  10. Get cracking says:

Burch should never have been allowed to be in public office.

  11. Voter says:

I’m so happy Fahy came back in the picture and was given a safe seat before all those hard working members. It really shows the public how they value these candidates that’ve been telling the voters that the OBAUBPERS have changed.

Now candidates like Malachi Symonds, John Seymour, Marcus Jones, Montell Currin, Tarik Smith, Dion Smith, Deon Smith, Dwayne Robinson, Kellan Lewis, Rodrae Durrant and Carl Neblett can see and feel the truth. Same old UBP play style, use the Tokens and place the puppet masters in safe seats. After this election loss you men really need to think about starting your own political party.
