Student Networking Event On December 20th

December 14, 2017

The Bermuda Hospitality Institute and Fairmont Southampton have joined forces to host a networking event for local students interested in pursuing a career in the hospitality industry.

The 2017 Student Networking Event, taking place next Wednesday, December 20th in Fairmont Southampton’s Gardenia Rooms from 4pm until 7pm, providing S4 and College Students a chance to learn more about educational paths and job opportunities available within the hospitality sector.

Malika Cartwright, Executive Director of the Bermuda Hospitality Institute, said: “We are thrilled to be hosting next week’s event in partnership with Fairmont Southampton. The goal is to provide young people with greater insight into the fast-paced and rewarding world of hospitality, so they can determine if such careers would be a good fit for them.

“This event is open to high school seniors and college students who have an interest in hospitality, as well as those curious to find out more about what the industry entails. Through Fairmont Southampton, we are also able to provide a rare opportunity for young people to jumpstart their careers by potentially securing a job in hospitality for next summer.”

In addition to guest speakers like local chef Michiko Campbell, and food and beverage function manager Jaja Millet, both from the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, the event will feature roundtable discussions, networking opportunities and door prizes. Both parents and students are also welcome to attend.

Jamahl Simmons, Minister of Economic Development and Tourism, will be present for the occasion; as will representatives from the Department of Workforce Development, whom will discuss scholarships options available for aspiring hospitality industry professionals.

Ashjuanna Thomas, the Learning and Development Manager from Fairmont Southampton, stated: “Fairmont Southampton is currently under a cultural transformation with our parent company AccorHotels leading the journey, and with that we have embarked on accepting the identity that we are a career destination.

“As the 2nd largest employer on Island we want to ensure that we are creating a path for our young Bermudians and partnering with BHI is the least of what we could do. I am particularly fond of this event as I volunteered at BHI’s very first networking event in 2009 as a student table host, and now am able to join the event as an industry professional.”

She continued: “The team is excited for next week’s event as we are always looking for ways we can positively impact the community. We are looking forward to being able to meet our future industry leaders who will one day be taking over our roles.”

Fairmont Southampton has 20 positions they are seeking to fill with summer students.

The hotel’s management team wanted to offer an opportunity to young Bermudians, especially those keen on a career in the industry, to have access to these entry-level roles. Summer jobs are available in areas such as Conference Services, Beach & Pools, Purchasing, Accounts, Culinary, Food & Beverage, Engineering, Front Office, and Housekeeping.

“We are looking for students who are highly motivated, open to learning, passionate, possess a positive attitude, and who are natural team players,” Ms Thomas explained. “We can teach the skills, but it’s the right attitude and positive personal qualities that will take them far in the hospitality industry.”

Interested participants are encouraged to RSVP by Monday, December 18. To register, visit www.fairmontcareers.com and fill out the application form, along with your resume.
