Nine Work Permit Applications For Triathlon

April 26, 2018

There have been nine applications made for work permits through the Ministry of Tourism related to this weekend’s triathlon, the Ministry confirmed, with two for DJs, three for support staff for triathlete bike rental coordination, two for drone pilots and two for TV engineers.

The drone and TV engineers relate to the broadcast, which is expected to be a very high end production, and will be broadcast internationally, with BTA CEO Kevin Dallas saying at this morning’s press conference that the triathlon will be on NBC in the US, CBC in Canada, and BBC in the UK, which Mr Dallas called “fantastic exposure for us.”

“An event like this is great not only as it brings visitors, but because it will be broadcast and shared with the world,” Mr Dallas said. “It’s also going to be shared widely on social media.”

Lagardere Sports Media Services is involved in the broadcast, with the recent BTA contract notices listing a $411,000 payment to the global sports company for “Host Broadcast service for ITU World Triathlon.”

In providing a breakdown of the work permits, a Government spokesperson said, “There have been nine applications made for work permits through the Ministry of Tourism:

  • “Two [2] for DJ’s to perform at function[s] held in relation to the Triathlon;
  • “Three [3] Support Staff  for Triathlete Bike Rental Coordination;
  • “Two [2] drone pilots;
  • “Two [2] TV engineers.”

There will be over 50 elite men and over 30 elite women in Saturday’s race — which will be broadcast internationally – and nations being represented include the USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Mexico, Israel, Barbados, Australia, Czech Republic, Spain, Slovakia, Austria, China, Japan, Germany, UAE, Cayman, Denmark, Portugal, Costa Rica, Korea, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan and of course, Bermuda, with reigning world champion Flora Duffy considered to be a favorite as she races on her home soil.

Hamilton Princess is the official hotel for the event, and the resort is sold out for the weekend of festivities, and the BTA previously confirming that at the beginning of April, island-wide hotel bookings were pacing 10.6% ahead of last April, with “most of the occupancy increase is attributed to group room nights.”
