Tennis: Trey Mallory Wins In Debut In Costa Rica

Trey Mallory representing Bermuda in Davis Cup this week in Costa Rica made history by being the first Bermuda player to win a match on his debut.

National Tennis Director/Davis Cup coach Ricky Mallory said, “The decision made by the Association to rebuild the team and inject juniors into the team paid off with Trey winning his match playing at #2 against Antigua & Barbuda’s Kevin Gardner; defeating him 7-6[5], 6-2.

“I am pleased at how the whole team rallied around Trey and helped him overcome his first match jitters. Wearing a different hat as Treys father, I’m extremely proud of his accomplishment.

“I’ve seen him work hard over the years and represent Bermuda at every age level. To watch him grow and progress as a player and a young man is a true testament to the people around him.”

It was a bittersweet victory for Bermuda as David Thomas lost to ATP tour player Jody Maginley 6-1,6-3 then Jenson Bascome and Gavin Manders teaming up to lose the deciding match 6-7, 6-3, 6-4.

The tournament continues.
