City: Edward Benevides To Retire This Month

The City of Hamilton announced that it is seeking to fill the post of Secretary to the Corporation & Chief Operating Officer as Edward Benevides “has decided to retire at the end of this month having reached retirement age.”

The City said, “In May of 2018, Mr. Benevides was put on paid administrative leave from the City following charges being brought against him and three others concerning the Par-La-Ville hotel project. In January, all charges were dismissed against the four defendants.

“With Mr. Benevides announcement the City Council will look to replace to replace Mr. Benevides and has offered him a consultancy position until the end of 2019.”

Mayor Charles Gosling said, “Ed has played an integral role at the City over the last decade. I’ve always appreciated his advice and input as well as the long hours he committed to the City. I can imagine that the court’s ruling was a huge relief to him and his family, as it was to the City.

“Last month the court ruled that there was insufficient evidence for the Supreme Court trail to be heard and I’m just relieved for him and his family that this unfortunate episode is behind them.

“That being said, with Ed slated for retirement this year, he has made the decision to step down from his role and the City will be looking to fill that position. He left momentous shoes to fill and we’re grateful that Ed has agreed to come on board as a consultant to assist with the transition.

“I take this opportunity to thank Tanya Iris, the City Treasurer, who stepped in as Acting Secretary & COO over the last nine months as well as City Engineer Patrick Cooper who assumed the role during her absence.”
