The Bermuda Community Climate Program [BCCP] — established by Roots through the Loren Hotel — announced WindReach Bermuda and the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute [BUEI] as recipients of this year’s BCCP Awards, recognizing their “transformative initiatives that expand access to climate education and strengthen Bermuda’s environmental resilience.”

“WindReach Bermuda’s project, ‘Environmental Education Programme – Creating Pathways to Access’ aims to enhance inclusive access to nature and climate education for individuals with mobility, sensory, or cognitive disabilities. The project will restore biodiversity on WindReach’s 9-acre property by upgrading the outdoor learning space along their Sensory Trail. Activities include renovating the 100-meter trail, removing invasive species, planting endemic species to improve climate resilience and sequester carbon, and installing inclusive signage to ensure full participation for all visitors. “BUEI will implement their ‘Ripple Effect 2’ project to cultivate a generation of environmentally knowledgeable youth in Bermuda who actively contribute to climate resilience. The project integrates climate and biodiversity education into P5 and P6 curricula across the island, provides teacher training, and supports 15–20 student-led biodiversity restoration projects on school campuses and within their communities. These hands-on initiatives empower students to directly restore and protect native biodiversity, fostering lifelong environmental stewardship. Visit https://buei.org/education/ to learn more.”

“Both WindReach and BUEI are leading examples of how innovative programs can combine accessibility, education, and environmental action,” said Leah Morrison, Managing Director of Roots. “These initiatives not only strengthen Bermuda’s climate resilience but also ensure that every member of our community can connect meaningfully with nature.”

The spokesperson said, “The projects were selected by an external strategic advisory committee consisting of Bermuda-based individuals including a local climate specialist, a former government employee, and a long-time member of the business and philanthropic community. The awards will be formally recognized at the Roots Bermuda Sunset Cruise Fundraiser on 23 June 2025 celebrating commitment to climate action and responsible tourism. Tickets for the fundraiser can be purchased from the events page PTIX.”
