Applications Open For BFA Legends Scholarship

The Bermuda Football Association [BFA] announced that applications are now being accepted for the BFA Legends Scholarships 2019.

“Bermuda will recall Mical Hardtman, Deshae Darrell, Micah Pond, Andrew McDowall and Savannah Fisher were all awarded with a two-year scholarship award in 2018,” a spokesperson said.

“The 2019 BFA Legends, who were unveiled during the BFA Awards Ceremony held on April 25th at City Hall are as follows:

  • “Mr. Richard Calderon has won every major trophy in Bermuda a few times, mostly with North Village, with the most memorable being the NVCC Triple Crown winning team of 1978, when he was also their MVP. Richard represented Bermuda at the senior level many times and his only regret was missing out on playing on Bermuda’s’ Bronze Medal winning team at the CAC Games due to a severe hamstring injury sustained weeks before the tournament. Richard help form the Bermuda Football Foundation, was a former President of the Bermuda Football Association and is a founding member of the Bermuda Football Coaches Association
  • “Mr. Robert Calderon was a member of the North Village Triple Crown team of 1978. Robert won the league title on two additional occasions, the FA Cup three times, the Dudley Eve Trophy, Martonmere Cup and Friendship Trophy on multiple occasions. He captained and coached the Senior Men’s National Team and won a bronze medal at the CAC games in Medellin, Colombia. He is a founding member of the Bermuda Football Coaches Association. He is also a founding member of the Bermuda Football Foundation. He was a former Vice-President of the Bermuda Football Association and served as Chairman of the BFA’s Technical Committee.
  • “Mrs. Lesley Cherry-White is a graduate of the Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia [Canada], earning a bachelor’s Degree in physical education and a master’s degree in Education Administration. She is former Women’s National team player from 1989 – 1997. Lesley was also a member of the BFA’s Competitions Committee. Lesley was one of the first two Bermudian women to play football at the University level.
  • “Mr. Randy Bean started his career at Southampton Rangers as a junior player and made his debut for the senior team at the age of 17. He joined join the North Village Community Club at the age of 19 spending 10 years where he won numerous trophies including his most coveted Triple Crown in 1978. Randy Bean was part of the National Team that qualified for the Pam Am Games in 1979. He also played many international friendly matches during his time with the Bermuda National Team.
  • “Mr. Alan Peacock has largely been credited with being responsible for many of the successes of the former Hotels International Football Club through his playing ability and leadership which saw the club win numerous titles in the 1970s and 1980s including winning the League on two occasions, the FA Cup in 1984-85, the Friendship Trophy in 1982-83 and the Martonmere Cup in 1981-82 and 1983-84. He was a good captain and, for many players and even greater coach. He used his overseas contacts to bring teams to Bermuda in the 1980s and supported the Bermuda Football Association in his capacity as Executive Director to drive international football activity for the National Team in the 1980’s and 90’s. Alan passed away suddenly in 2017.

“The Legends Scholarship Awards emanate from the BFA’s Strategic Plan, which among so many wonderful initiatives place real emphasis on providing the opportunity for our players to develop academically through the sport of football.

“The BFA has committed funding on an annually basis specifically to aid the educational aspirations of our young football scholars to attend school including colleges and universities both locally and overseas.

“Applications can be downloaded from the BFA Website [www.bermudafa.com] or collected from the BFA’s Clyde Best Center of Excellence. The deadline for applications is June 30th, 2019.”
