BPS To Support Bermuda Gay Pride Parade

June 21, 2019

The police “confirmed they are in dialogue with OutBermuda to support Bermuda’s first parade to celebrate Gay Pride this summer,” and also said they are investigating “social media comments currently in circulation that threaten or suggest violence towards the LGBTQ community.”

Commissioner of Police Stephen Corbishley said: “The BPS represents and supports all aspects of our diverse communities and we want to be alongside LGBTQ people to celebrate their identity and have confidence that their police service is there when they have need.

“We have many in Bermuda, particularly young people, who may feel alone or isolated due to their sexual orientation or are subject to hateful comments or actions. This is not right and all communities deserve respect and equality.

“The Pride Parade can help change attitudes and is a celebration of the progress that LGBTQ communities have made all over the world.

“I am also aware of a minority of social media comments currently in circulation that threaten or suggest violence towards the LGBTQ community.

“We are now investigating these posts and action will be taken against those responsible.”

  1. Mike Hind says:

    Well done, BPS!
Protecting ALL of us, not just some.

    • sage says:

They never supported 420 legalization celebrations, just took everyone’s pictures and sniffed around looking someone to arrest. They don’t care that others may feel isolated due to their involvement with a benign, medicinal plant and that they are subject to hateful comments and actions which are not right and they give this community zero respect and zero equality.

      • Mike Hind says:

Have you organized and lobbied the Government yet? Or are you still just anonymously whining on here that pot isn’t legal?

And what does the 420 celebration have to do with Pride?

Or is this just yet another distraction from you?

      • bluenose says:

        Deflection

    • Stop says:

Oh STFU Mike! Any chance you get you put your stupid lame comments out there! Go play your banjo and leave us Christians alone!

      • Mike Hind says:

        Weird. I didn’t mention Christians…

And again, I won’t shut up, especially because some coward who doesn’t even have the courage to show their face tells me to.

How about this… you go learn how to play an instrument with some proficiency… or find a hobby of some sort… any hobby at all… and stop lying by using your religion to try to hurt people for absolutely no reason.

      • bluenose says:

        How very christian of you

  2. Real Deal says:

who else knew carnival was primer to test the latitude of acceptance and and argue of precedence.

  3. Toodle-oo says:

Good ! Pity they weren’t of the same mindset in the mid 80s though .

  4. I'm just saying says:

That is not the right way of saying it It should have been said we will provide law and order. It was my impression that the Police are supposed to be nutral. What the heck!

    • Mike Hind says:

Standing up for equality in the face of hate IS neutral!

      • I'm just saying says:

It’s not the same thing. Dah!

        • Mike Hind says:

So… the cops’ job ISN’T to stand up for those that are being attacked and protect those who are being threatened?

          This is news to me.

What else? Are they not supposed to arrest robbers?

          I’m learning so much today!

    • Kodak moment says:

      nutral….umm,what’s that.

      • JCS says:

It’s a new drink. Very nice with a fish sandwich!

  5. Mrs Brady says:

I’m positive that the gay pride people will be better behaved than the over sexualized carnival gyrators.

They won’t be twerking at the police I suspect.

    • wahoo says:

They twerked? That is pretty gross…..who the heck wants to see that?

  6. Tony Brannon says:

Thanks Commissioner Corbishley and the BPS! @BermudaPolice
I hope hundreds/thousands will come and support the parade
and celebrations in Victoria Park on August 31st.

Friends, family, and all the corporate and business world that
Signed up to support the struggle for #LGBTQ #Equality, I hope you are there with your colleagues on the day.

It will be a great day, a historic day..

  7. Jevon R says:

Mr Hind, the disagreement of ones lifestyle does not equate to hate….it simply means we do not agree with what you do….ya LGBTQ whatever the rest of the letters may be need to stop this hate talk whenever someone doesn’t agree with you guys

    • Question says:

I disagree with carnival, it’s disgusting, but I don’t spend time and money curtailing their rights.

    • lav says:

“it simply means we do not agree with what you do”

I don’t agree with what you do, so you should stop doing it. OK?

    • Onion Juice says:

Thats like when you expose racism, they call you a racist.
These communities are very influential, so eventually they will get their way but I dont think their lifestyle will dominate the normal lifestyle.

      • Mike Hind says:

It’s not when you expose racism that people have a problem with, OJ.

It’s when you lie, ignore facts and say hateful things to push your privileged political agenda that people have a problem with.

And no one is asking to dominate anything. They’re just asking for people to stop trying to hurt them for no reason. That’s it.

You’ve been told this many, many times. Yet you continue to say horrible, false things that you know aren’t true in order to oppose stopping people from getting hurt.

And yet, you pretend that you’re the victim in this.

Do you not see how some folks might have a problem with this?

And, for the record, I agree that you aren’t a racist.
A bigot who is willing to say anything in order to push his oppressive false narrative? Absolutely.
A hypocrite who demands unearned privilege while denouncing those that have it? Totally.

        But not racist.

      • bluenose says:

So you are saying that the LGBTQ Community are not ‘normal’? Shame on you.

      • Mark says:

And I don’t think anything you ever say is relevant or intellectual.

    • bluenose says:

It is not a ‘lifestyle’, any more than being straight is.

  8. Jevon R says:

How does the gay pride parade ensure the human race will be around in the future….how is this lifestyle normal?

    • Mike Hind says:

      And to address these…

Pride helps LGBT kids. It gives them support. It shows them love. It lets them know that they aren’t alone.
That has a marked and observed effect on suicide rates. Lower suicide rates LITERALLY means that humans will be around in the future.

But I know what you’re saying… and it’s based on an ignorant premise: That gay folks can’t procreate.
It’s a false premise. Being gay doesn’t take away one’s ability to have kids.

      As for your last question?
That’s one of the “hateful comments” mentioned in the story…
How would you feel if someone told you that you aren’t normal?
      Especially when you are.
Homosexuality is normal. It occurs in countless other species. It’s totally normal.

      Please educate yourself.

      • Stop says:

Oh shut up already Mike! Gays are not normal if they were we would not be having this debate! Gays confuse kids and cannot have children unless they involve another sex which again confuses kids to no end! Gays are an abomination in the eyes of the Lord!

        • Mike Hind says:

I will NOT shut up, especially when told to do so by some coward hiding under the hood of anonymity.

And everything you’ve said in this post? Absolute nonsense. It’s completely false and hateful.

Bigots like you are so bad for our country.

        • MsFedUp says:

Absolutely ridiculous. Your ‘Lord’ does not exist to the majority of people in the world. It is normal or else it wouldn’t happen within nature. Stop using your religion to justify your bigotry. Kids only get confused when they’re taught hate and intolerance. Trust me – the world population is not under threat by gays. The ignorance shown on some of these threads is unbelievable. So much time and energy spent on something that has no affect on you.

      • Onion Juice says:

Comparing animals to humans is like compairimg apples to oranges.

        • question says:

So why is that you have many times made the (completely wrong) claim that humans are the only animals that ever display homosexual behaviour?

        • Mike Hind says:

You’re the one that keeps bringing up the “it’s unnatural” argument… then you say “don’t compare humans to animals”?

          That’s insane.

How are we supposed to take you seriously when you do nonsense like this?

        • Mark says:

Sort of like comparing common sense and you.

        • MsFedUp says:

human beings are animals. We are all part of the animal kingdom

        • Anbu says:

We r animals you moron. Where the hell u think we come from?! Oh right u must be another believer in the sky fairy and that earth is only 7000 years old. Smh. Dig a hole and bury yourself please.

    • MonkeySea says:

Your ignorance is deplorable. Wow, just wow!

    • Whistling Frog says:

It’s not normal.. That’s why it’s gonna be a parade. Tony Brannon stated that “it will be a great historic day..” I guess it will in the event that a whole lot more sun will be shinning in the faces of anyone wearing the costumes from carnival. Hurry and mark you spots on the sidewalks, duct tape is short supply…

    • Stop says:

      It’s not! It’s an abomination!

      • Mike Hind says:

Stuff being against your religion means that YOU don’t get to do it. Leave the rest of us out of it.

      • bluenose says:

        Says who?

    • PBanks says:

Jevon, a gay pride parade isn’t going to stop people procreating. Do you really believe that ‘gay pride’ is going to stop babies being born? Or adopted?

    • Cow Polly says:

Does any parade ensure the human race will be around in the future? That’s not its purpose. It’s purpose is to embrace and welcome a group within our community that has been demonized by other groups that ought to know better. We will celebrate together and let them know that they have our support and are as ‘normal’ as the rest of us

    • Mike Hind says:

Notice how none of these people have addressed any points or backed up their claims or shown even an ounce of integrity or honesty.

They will say anything to support their hate.

But BOY, do they not like it when you call them on it!

  9. Me says:

With all the rabbits in the world trust me Jevon the human race will survive it’s all the religious wars around the Globe we should be worried about

  10. Another person says:

    No cops at pride.

    • Mike Hind says:

      This story literally contradicts you…

      • Momma says:

Oh STFU Mike! No one wants your opinion!

        • Mark says:

          Nor yours’ you hyprocritical zealot.

        • Mike Hind says:

          Sorry… I didn’t realize I needed your permission.

It’s weird that you choose to only attack me to tell me to shut up, yet don’t actually debate me or show that I’m wrong.

It’s very telling that you don’t actually have any sort of argument or basis to back up your position, so you have to resort to silliness like this.

If your position is so strong, why not show an ounce of integrity and defend it?

Oh, wait… it’s because you know you’re wrong,

          Never mind.

        • bluenose says:

What a well thought out comment

        • Anbu says:

Yet most agree with him huh muppet? Dont like gays? Dont go. Better yet, leave the country. Gay is here to stay. Get with the program or bounce. they wont miss you, neither will we.

      • Another person says:

Have you never heard of the idea/movement of no cops at pride? It is the idea that cops should not be part of the parade, especially in uniform (should also not say that they are cops when in civilian uniform). Pride is historically anti-cop and it should stay that way. Heard of Stonewall and other events?

        • berlinda says:

NYC welcomes its cops in their Pride parade.

        • Not to be Rude says:

Pride is not anti-cop it is anti-oppressions. Although groups have made point about having the Police in the Parades when they are ignoring the problems of LGBTQ+ and still being oppress through the Police.

An example is the Toronto Pride Organization was approached by a Black Lives Matter group who requested the removal of the Police from the actual Parade given their history with the black community and the LGBTQ within that community plus their lack of response to several murders involving gay men.

There was a heated debate from my understanding but the outcome was that the Police would be allowed to be in the Parade since there are LGBTQ+ members who are Police and they need to be represented but they would not be allowed to wear anything other than their uniforms so no guns, tasers ect.

In regards to Bermuda’s Pride event I feel the same approach should be taken, they should be welcomed to take part in the Parade minus any tools of aggression or the like.

  11. lav says:

“How does the gay pride parade ensure the human race will be around in the future”

I don’t think you know how humans procreate….a parade isn’t involved.

Stay in school, little stupid one…come back when you’re ready to play with adults.

  12. MM says:

The police have said they will support this parade , however , when a request was made to escort a soccer team out of Somerset a few years back because of threats they routinely said they don’t do that. Whether a threat is real or perceived , officers have a duty to provide a physical presence. Several times soccer teams have been attacked , the police most likely attended a few games

  13. Joe Bloggs says:

    Does anyone remember Colin Coxall?

    • Mark says:

Do you have a point to make??

      • Joe Bloggs says:

Yes, if one acts contrary to the PLP Government’s policy one can expect to be sent home early and without explanation (to one’s self or the public).

        • Mark says:

Is that a threat? Get in the KoolAid line Joe, extra big sippy cup for you.

        • Toodle-oo says:

Coxall was dismissed under the UBP not the PLP. And if you knew the real reason your head would explode.

          • Mark says:

Couldn’t care less. Pee El Pee will explode this whole island

            • Toodle-oo says:

Note that my post wasn’t directed at you .
