Looking At Last Two Bermuda vs Guyana Games

June 5, 2019

There isn’t much history between Bermuda and Guyana as both sides get ready to face off in a friendly at the National Sports Centre on Thursday.

The two Gold Cup debutants have only played twice before and are using this contest as a tune-up ahead of the more critical games later this month.

Both previous matches were in 2011 as the national teams were trying to qualify for the 2014 World Cup.

Guyana beat Bermuda 2-1 at Providence Stadium on September 6, 2011. In that match, captain Khano Smith saved Bermuda from being blanked with a goal in the 90th minute. Defences ruled in the first half as neither team scored a goal.

There are three holdovers from that squad that is still playing for the National Team: Reggie, Lambe, Zeiko Lewis, and Nahki Wells.

In the return match on October 11, the two sides played to a 1-1 draw. Both teams again played to a 0-0 draw at the half at the National Sports Centre before John Barry Nusum raised the crowds’ hopes by scoring in the 71st minute. Those bright smiles soon disappeared when substitute Ricky Shakes levelled the match in the 81st minute.
