1940s Bermuda Mermaid Poster Sells For $5,750
A Pan Am poster, created in the 1940s, led the way for designs promoting Bermuda as a travel destination at Swann Auction Galleries’ Vintage Poster auction in New York on August 7, selling for almost $6,000.
A spokesperson for the gallery explained, “Bermuda by Clipper/Pan American World Airways, by Boris Artzybasheff [1899-1965], had expected to fetch as much as $1,000 to $1,500, but soared to $5,750.
“The top price for the sale was $14,300, paid for a 1900 design by the master of Art Nouveau, Alphonse Mucha, while a 1970 poster promoting Porsche and featuring the actor Steve McQueen went for $7,000. In all, close to 380 lots fetched a total of running into several hundred thousand dollars.
