BNG To Showcase Artwork By Tomaz Viera
The Bermuda National Gallery [BNG] will showcase artwork by Azorean artist Tomaz Viera until November 9th in honour of the 170th anniversary of the arrival of the first Portuguese immigrants in Bermuda.
A spokesperson said, “In honour of the 170th Anniversary of the Portuguese arrival in Bermuda and their significant contribution to Bermuda’s rich and diverse culture, BNG will be showcasing an artwork from the BNG collection by Azorean artist Tomaz Viera on display from November 2nd to November 9th at the BNG.
“Bermuda has developed as a country and a community through many different cultures, histories, experiences, and expressions. And it is the acceptance and celebration of our differences and similarities that we all come together as a community of Bermuda. The Bermuda National Gallery collects artworks that represents and celebrates Bermuda’s diversity.
“This year is the 170th anniversary of the arrival of the first Portuguese immigrants in Bermuda. In 1849, 35 men, 16 women, and 7 children arrived in Bermuda from Madeira on the vessel, The Golden Rule, to work primarily as farm laborers. In recognition of this year and the significant contributions that the Portuguese community have given to the island, November 4th, 2019 has been declared a public holiday.
“In support of the 170th anniversary and to celebrate Bermuda’s Portuguese heritage, culture and continued contributions to Bermuda, the Bermuda National Gallery has on display, for one week, a silkscreen by Azorean artist, Tomaz Viera from the BNG collection.
“Tomaz Viera is both an artist and education, writer and theorist, through his paintings he explores the dualities of life; both representational and abstract.
“Set against a contrasting background, Viera presents a bird in flight with people in the foreground, this work could be read as the migration of the Portuguese peoples to Bermuda. He says of his paintings, “It is the beginning of a necessary adventure, that is, we are prepared to initiate an understanding of discourse”
