Age Concern Set To Host Health Plan Forum

December 3, 2019

Age Concern Bermuda is getting set to host a Health Plan Forum on Wednesday, December 4 starting at 5.30pm at the Salvation Army Citadel on North Street in Hamilton.

A spokesperson said, “Caregivers, working age and older adults are being invited by Age Concern Bermuda to hear information on the proposed Bermuda National Health Plan and the view points and perspectives of leaders in the healthcare system.

“The Minister of Health Kim Wilson will provide an overview of the Health Plan proposal which will be followed by a panel discussion and audience question and answer period.

“The panel will include Dr. Henry Dowling of the Bermuda Medical Doctors’ Association; Dr. Ricki Brathwaite of the Bermuda Health Council; Mr. Leon Bascome of the MoonGate Group and; nurse Anita Furbert RN. The forum will be moderated by Honorary Director of Age Concern, Mr. Charles Jeffers.”

Executive Director of Age Concern, Dr. Claudette Fleming, said, “We felt the need to conduct the forum because we are fielding questions and making observations that people do not really understand what the Bermuda National Health Plan proposal process is about. We ourselves would like greater deal clarity as to our members’ thoughts, and how or whether Age Concern should formalize an official view on their behalf.”

“The forum represents an ideal opportunity for our members and interested members of the public to listen to the Minister speak directly on the matter, while also gathering insight on the views of other healthcare industry leaders in order to formulate an informed perspective.

“Some of the questions we get asked at Age Concern are: whether Future Care will be impacted; whether such a plan will save money for healthcare users and; whether physician fees will be regulated? We look forward to receiving insight into these important matters and encourage as many persons as possible to attend.”

The spokesperson said, “The forum will be held on Wednesday, December 4th starting with light refreshments at 5.30pm at the Salvation Army Citadel, North Street, City of Hamilton. Interested people are asked to register in advance by calling 238-7525 between 10.00am and 4.00pm or emailing communications@ageconcern.bm, although non-registered persons will not be turned away, depending on attendance numbers.

“People who are not Age Concern members are also invited to attend. A minimum donation of $5 to support the organization is being requested of non-members.”
