PLP Call For OBA’s Leah Scott To Apologize

August 25, 2020

Following her remarks in a video today, the PLP called on OBA Deputy Leader Leah Scott to “apologize and retract her comments,” saying that “to question the Premier’s love of Bermuda and commitment to the betterment of Bermudians because of his mother’s heritage is beyond the pale.”

A PLP spokesperson said, “In a video posted on the One Bermuda Alliance Facebook page today, OBA Deputy Leader Leah Scott questioned Premier David Burt’s loyalty to Bermuda and Bermudians.

“Deputy Leader Scott, when talking about the PLP’s Bermudians first policies, said, ‘including the Premier, who comes from Jamaica. Where is his loyalty?’ In the conversation, the Premier’s Jamaican roots were brought up multiple times.

“We can disagree about politics and policy, but, to question the Premier’s love of Bermuda and commitment to the betterment of Bermudians because of his mother’s heritage is beyond the pale. We call on the OBA Deputy Leader to apologize and retract her comments,” the PLP added.

When asked about the PLP’s statement this evening, Ms Scott said she had no comment.

      • frank says:

this video with ms scott was a waste of time

      • Paul' says:

The UBPoba is clearly desperate even without Jet gate Craiggy. Ark

    • OBA supporter no more says:

Clearly she has a problem with Jamaicans so now I know who to vote for. The oba/ubp has brainwashed her and it’s sad.

      • Wahoo says:

I am not convinced. I think you are lying about ever having been a supporter of anything that isn’t green. Nice try though especially the part about Jamaicans.

  2. Pick a few words and spin! says:

Listen to the entire conversation. It’s not against the law or immoral to state when someone was born.

    • Born Bermudian says:

The Premier is a proud born Bermudian. Is it OK to lie about the Premier’s birth like Donald Trump did about Barack Obama?

      • wahoo says:

At this point it is clear that the premier is doing what he thinks is best for him and that is not necessarily what is best for Bermuda. No apology required from Leah Scott.

    • wide a wake says:

      what a waste of time

  3. Truthhertz says:

Isn’t that what you lot did to Fahy?

    • Onion Juice says:

But Fahy chastised Bermudians for blogging about expats but never chastised expats bloggong about Bermudians. Plus he spear headed de botched Immigration reform as soon as they got in when they promised they will prossess it.
      Dry Maple Leaf

      • Truthhertz says:

        It’s always different. Nasty.

      • Onion Puke says:

Who cares? the march to Fourth World status will only pick up pace.

        • Onion Juice says:

Thee whole world is is 4th world

          • Onion Puke says:

I realize there is no point in trying to enlighten you. But it’s sad to see your ignorance is apparently spreading.

      • Anbu says:

Dont blame fahy cause you were too stupid to understand the process. That blame lies solely at your own feet. And you still prove daily that u cannot fix stupid. Stupid

        • Morning says:

Fahy was the class clown and his own party used him to push the idea, voting time they pushed him to the side.

      • trufth says:

        “But, but, but…..”

That’s your response? Yea, sounds about right.

    • Now Ya Nice says:

      lets not forget the minister

  4. Mixitup says:

The OBA is desperate and hollow.

  5. Observer says:

Is that the best you can come up with Leah Scott now that an election has been called? Don’t see what the OBA can offer after this. Increase your seat capacity in the House and then you can you start talking about loyalty.

  6. Stage Left Productions says:

    Was that video a classic

  7. Revoke his work permit says:

Cmon PLP we need a better Premier!

  8. Joe Bloggs says:

Ahh, so it is ok for the PLP to say anything it wants about anyone but when the same tactics are used against the PLP it is “beyond the pale”.

The PLP hypocrisy is “beyond the pale”

    • K says:

I mean, if the OBA uses the tactics they complain about then they’re also being just as hypocritical.

      • Double S says:

But they see how effective these tactics with some of the electorate. So why not give it a shot.

      • Double S says:

If PLPers complain about the OBA using their tactics against them they are also being just as hypocritical.

  9. Sam says:

What’s even more ridiculous is that Leah Scott is an American !!!! A born and bred AMERICAN !!!! She came here as an adult. She really needs to stop ! And so now that she has status she thinks that it’s OK to say something as stupid as this ? Give me a break ! If this is all the OBA has to offer…..

  10. Rich says:

So politically stupid. This was a 20 minute video. No one has time to sit through that long a video – except the PLP’s war room.

  11. Toadinthehole says:

Selective editing by the plp. It is what we expect now. OBA tells is straight, plp deflects. That is not the type of government i want.

  12. Ringmaster says:

Still waiting for the apology from Hayward for his disgusting slurs against Pat Pamplin.

  13. Michael Dunkley…working behind the political scenes after he called sooo much damage to people’s lives. Please!!!!
    Fahey too!!
    Quite sickening.

  14. Not surprised says:

Is that the best their advisors can do. At least Vic Ball makes sure his speeches ate written for him.

  15. bright and early says:

Its fine to hold an election but who do you vote for if your a party person like me. I don’t know as both parties are lacking members in certain constituency. Whats happening ……

  16. Angry BBC says:

So was Burt born in Jamaica or not?

    • Zina says:

No. He is a born Bermudian. He has Jamaican heritage.

      • Warrior says:

Is it still so that a child born in Bermuda takes the father’s national status

  17. John Caines says:

It is definitely SILLY SEASON! Smh…

  18. Rise says:

What a bunch of bologna. The parties can still work together AFTER the election, so what’s the problem?

  19. Guy Carri says:

Hypocrites on almost everything they speak.

    Let’s just say:

    Michael Fahy.

Of course it wasn’t the same when PLP did it to him…………

  20. Truth is killin’ me... says:

The PLP have had plenty of time before COVID to fix the economy. Now they gonna use it as an EXCUSE and drill you with MORE TAXES! Change parties NOW!!

  21. watching says:

    Unacceptable and untrue.

Ms Scott and Mr Smith need to apologize. And even if he WAS born in Jamaica so what.

    • Double S says:

Hey now. It was you lot that coined the term ‘born Bermudian.’ Deal with it.

  22. Noah James says:

The PLP has, as expected, taken this out of context – they were talking about the PLP’s treatment on non-bermudians etc.

  23. moira thompson says:

Isnt Leah Scott born American? just sayin,

    • Wahoo says:

Not sure but I think EB swore allegiance to the American flag many years ago and nobody worried about that.

    • DCGAL says:

      YUP!

  24. Unbelievable says:

It’s stuff like this that makes me absolutely detest Bermuda politics. From both sides. Not only do politicians need to grow up but so do the voters.

  25. Crazy says:

The PLP love their Jamaican Premier’s; Ewart Brown and now David Burt. Both have ruining Bermuda’s economy as their legacies.

  26. Who cares says:

Nobody should care what type of Bermudian you are, you are either a Bermudian or you’re not. The point is that this upcoming election is nothing more than a young Bermudian stroking his ego and prancing in front of an audience that should really take a very good look at his agenda. He is a smart young man who unfortunately can’t rationalise what Bermuda needs to continue on a successful path. If he would only remove his blinkers he would see the wrong trail he is pursuing.

    • wahoo says:

      So right.

    • Joe Bloggs says:

The point you make was made by Sir James Astwood (former Chief Justice and head of the Court of Appeal and a “born Bermudian”) many times. The PLP refuse to accept it no matter how many times the Court say so

  27. Sam says:

The absurdity of it all is that Leah Scott is a born and bred American herself! How can she possibly say something like that with a straight face?

  28. David says:

The record speaks for itself Three years of the new Plp under Burt …….three Ministers of Immigration…….. the same report issued in 2017 by a former Minister of Immigration (Brown) a Special meeting of Parliament and still no decision by any of them, other than to hold another meeting. An apology is warranted alright, just not from the OBA!

  29. red rose says:

PLP, as usual, takes it out of context …. just more deflection from their abysmal handling of the economy ..

  30. Rocky5 says:

PLP sure are DESPERATE if this is their ONLY comment on a 20 minute OBA video….

  31. Jen says:

Bermuda’s OWN BIRTHER !! Next she will asking for David Burt’s papers.Very TRUMPY

  32. ROGER says:

BAD & SAD THING TO SAY BY HER. THE PREMIER, HIS CABINET & ALL OTHERS IN THAT AREA ARE DOING VERY WELL FOR BERMUDA. I FEEL SHE DOES NOT WANT TO BE REELECTED SO IS HELPING HERSELF BY SAYING THAT “OFF THE WALL” STATEMENT, COMMITTING HARI KARI

  33. Puzzle says:

I’ve lived here for 15 years, and have a huge love for Bermuda. Burt won’t let me stay or vote though. I wonder why?

    • Mark says:

Let me take a wild stab and guess it has something to do with your complexion??

  34. clearasmud says:

The Premier does not need to justify his decision to call an election to the opposition so I don’t understand why the OBA waste time trying to get mileage out of it. As I understand it the options are to have several bi election and then have the required general election within the next 2 years or skip the bi-elections and have the required general election now.The election was going to cost us $1 million no matter when it was called.

  35. Question says:

When is Burch going to apologise for criticising Mr Justice Hargun’s Indian heritage?
When is Burgess going to apologise for calling Mr Hargun a ‘South African’?

    • Ringmaster says:

When Hell freezes over. The PLP can say anything they like and nothing is done. Hayward has refused to apologize to Pat Pamplin for his disgusting slur. It seems a certain segment of the population have no regard for decency and will denigrate their own. Karma will wait until the right time.

      • Stage Left Productions says:

Well well well … The Power of freedom of Speech…. Say what you want just expect to be judged for your words and works by your peers . The truth is an offence but not a Sin .
After looking n listening to the video do you really have to ask why they in the Opposition party??? Smh !!

        • Double S says:

All the nastiness the PLP spews and this is the thing that offends you. Hypocrites.

  36. Rocky5 says:

If this is the PLP’s only complaint, everything else they say about the PLP in the 20 minute must be true!
