Rotary Interact Club Honours Principal Joynes
The Hamilton Rotary Interact Club hosted and funded a Busy Bee Book Club Program in honour of the Late Northlands Principal, Mr. Charles Joynes.
A spokesperson said, “In honour of the Late Northlands Principal, Mr. Charles Joynes, the Hamilton Rotary Interact Club hosted and funded a Busy Bee Book Club Program using Zoom.
“Com for 10 Northlands Reading students during the months of July and August. This was a Literacy Initiative aimed at improving Reading, Writing and Cognition. .The program was carried out under the leadership of outgoing Interact President, S2 Berkeley Institute student, Keren Smith and incoming Interact President Sari Smith, Home Schooled student.
“Students in the Reading Club ranged in age from 5 to 9 years old. Each student was taught using an Individualized Learning Plan aimed at meeting unique needs. The Volunteer teacher was Hamilton Rotary Youth Director, Cathy I. Bassett. Books and resource materials were purchased from Interact Club funds raised during club fundraisers.
“The Hamilton Rotary nteracters range in age from 12 to 18 years old. The original plan of the Interact members was to hold a movie night for Northlands youngsters, but due to Covid 19, schools were closed and the teens decided to host a Summer Busy Bee Book Club instead to help strengthen Reading skills. All students from Northlands improved by at least two Reading levels this summer.
“Outstanding student, Hayden Burgess , received an engraved medal and a certificate for being the most improved student. He moved up three whole levels during the summer!
“Pictured with Hayden are mom and dad, Mr and Mrs Burgess. Two of the Northlands Book Club students will receive free Tutoring in the Fall as part of a Rotary Interact Literacy Scholarship.
“Advisors of The Hamilton Rotary Interact Club are Glenda Edwards, Cathy Bassett, Shammara Simmons and Denoris Armstrong.”
