TAD Voting Demonstration On Saturday

September 10, 2020

A demonstration of the Tactile Audio Device [TAD] — which is for vision impaired voters — will take place on Saturday [Sept 12] in front of the Bermuda National Library on Queen Street.

A spokesperson said, “Vision Bermuda, formerly the Bermuda Society for the Blind, is appealing to you to help maintain the rights of the vision impaired voter by informing others of the availability of a Tactile Audio Device [TAD].

“For the first time in Bermuda persons who are vision impaired, blind, or unable to see the ballot paper can vote without assistance. Thanks to a collaboration with Vision Bermuda, formerly the Bermuda Society for the Blind, and the Parliamentary Registrar’s Office this population can now cast a secret ballot independently and in private, a right experience and enjoyed by others.

“The procedure developed utilizes a Tactile Audio Device [TAD], which allows voters who are blind or vision-impaired to use their hearing and touch senses to mark the candidate of their choice.

“A Focus Group was conducted to test the accuracy, usability, and privacy of the TAD, 100 % of those using the TAD for the first time marked their ballots as intended, found the TAD audio labelling device user-friendly, and were able to vote without assistance.

“We would like to inform as many people as possible about the availability of the TAD and to encourage those with vision loss to request and use the TAD when voting. It is our hope you can assist by informing others of the availability of the Tactile Audio Device.

“For those interested in a demonstration or wish to take the opportunity to use the TAD, join us on Saturday, 12th September, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm in front of the Bermuda National Library on Queen Street.
