National Museum Releases Heritage Matters 8
It’s time to dive back into Bermuda’s history with the release of Heritage Matters 8, the latest compilation of articles by Dr. Edward Harris, Founding Executive Director Emeritus of the National Museum of Bermuda [NMB].
For ten years, Dr. Harris’s weekly Heritage Matters column ran in the Mid Ocean News, and later the Royal Gazette, reminding and informing readers about the unique and multifaceted nature of Bermuda’s heritage.
“In the latest issue of Heritage Matters, explore the wonders of the “grassy meadows of the Sargasso Sea”, the “sea without a shoreline” that is carried into Bermuda’s waters by the four great currents of the Atlantic Ocean,” a spokesperson said.
“Connect with the stories of Bermuda’s maritime past, from its whaling industry, to Non-Mariners, to the terrifying and beautiful Hurricanes and the havoc they wreak. Skip through time, spending one moment with Harvest Queen, a product of one of Bermuda’s last cedar harvests, the next millions of years back to the island’s formation, before being transported to the foundation of the Island’s first school, Warwick Academy.
“Woven throughout the collection is an indelible plea for readers to recognise, value and promote Bermuda’s heritage. Bermuda’s Heritage is immensely valuable, something to be protected and lauded.”
In one of the articles, Dr. Harris states: “I believe most Bermudians are fascinated by, and love, their heritage, which must be taught to each new generation. That heritage is much of what gives us identity and sense of place, and we literally destroy it at our economic and spiritual peril.”
NMB Executive Director Elena Strong said: “NMB Press is pleased to publish the 8th edition of Dr Harris’s heritage articles, creating a permanent reference for teachers, students, locals and visitors interested in learning more about our diverse heritage. We are thankful to the anonymous donors whose support made this publication possible.”
Heritage Matters 8 is available for purchase [$10/copy] at the National Museum of Bermuda’s Ticket Office, by emailing info@nmb.bm, or at The Bookmart at Brown & Co.
