Premier Burt Reflects On Last Four Years

July 20, 2021

“We remain in unprecedented times, and the burden of leadership will still require tough decisions to be made,” Premier David Burt said, adding that “the decisions we make will not always be the most popular, and definitely will not please everyone, but we have, and will continue to make the decisions in the best interest of all of the people of this beautiful country.”

In an email sent out to party members and posted on his social media said, Premier Burt said, “4 years ago I was sworn in as Premier of Bermuda following the Progressive Labour Party’s decisive general election victory. The 1,461 days since have consisted of tremendous highs and heartbreaking lows. Prior to Covid-19, we were making tremendous progress executing our election pledges, but as was the case everywhere, things came to a halt.

PLP supporters celebrate following the election victory in 2017

“Now as a country, we are trying to find the right balance between the health of our people and the health of our economy. I would be lying if I said that the last 4 years, especially the last 18 months, have been easy – they have not.

“We remain in unprecedented times, and the burden of leadership will still require tough decisions to be made. The decisions we make will not always be the most popular, and definitely will not please everyone, but we have, and will continue to make the decisions in the best interest of all of the people of this beautiful country.

“Despite the challenges of a pandemic, I am honoured to lead a team that has worked ourselves to the bone over the past 4 years, and especially during the period of the last 18 months. I am grateful to all that have served alongside me in Cabinet, in our Progressive Labour Party Caucus, Executive Committee, and Central Committee. I am also grateful to the numerous Cabinet Office Staff and the Public Officers who are the engine of this island’s government who execute the policies of the Government of the day.

“To the Bermudian people, I am heartened by the support, messages, prayers and encouragement that I receive on a daily basis. The kind words on the street, the honking of horns, the whatsapps that say – “stick to the wicket” and the whispers of “don’t worry about them lot you are doing a great job” – truly does give me a lift and keeps me going.

“To our PLP Members, thank you for your continued confidence in our Party.

“To my staff led by Senator Owen Darrell who has been there since day one, thanks for putting up with me and supporting the work of this office day in and day out!

“To my parents, siblings, family and friends – your love, support, and understanding is invaluable, thank you for being there for Premier Burt & David Burt.

“And finally, to the love of my life Kristin Burt, and to my children Nia & Ed, who sacrifice their time with me for Bermuda – thank you & I love you.

“Now – back to work to get ready for tomorrow’s cabinet meeting.”

Burt and The PLP have been handed the greatest get out of jail free card with the pandemic.

    Don’t forget…they:

    Caused the $3bn debt
Caused a population and skills exodus from Bermuda
Have no idea how to grow the economy
    Can’t run a bus service

They have been in power for over 20 years and have presided over a hero to zero decline of Bermuda. THe economy was tanking long before COVID, all COIVD did was speed up the inevitable.

No ideas, no clue, deer in the headlights.

I see nothing about the BALLOONING debt. Or we just going to sweep that under the rug.
    Bitcoin will cover it.

Oh give me a break! This is so text book political bunk it makes me sick. Covid is all you can talk about? Let me say that you were not fulfilling any election promises/pledges prior to covid in fact all you were doing was wasting taxpayer money and increasing the debt that will plague us and our great grand children.

People should be seeing through you by now and coming to one of two conclusions about you and the rest of your MPs and and consultant friends. Either you have no clue what you are doing or you are only in it for personal gain (perhaps a little of both you say?).

You cannot talk about the last 4 years….you should talk about the last 22 years everyone else is. You and your party have ruined Bermuda financially and we are now a broken and sorry little place.

    Thanks for nothing.

But who? Why? How? And to where are the questions?
