Video: BIU Call For Members To Meet On Monday

August 27, 2021

[Updated with PDF] The Bermuda Industrial Union [BIU] President Chris Furbert is holding a press conference this morning [Aug 27], and we will have additional coverage later on and in the meantime the live video is below.

As it stands now, the BIU has called for a 2 day shutdown starting on Monday, August 30th if the Government does not amend the legislation pertaining to decertification, the Government said they have “no intention to amend the legislation,” and BPSU said they “will not be encouraging” their members to participate in the “proposed 2-day shutdown.”

Update: The BIU President said, “we are asking for all our divisions that are not essential services to report to Union Square at 8.00am on Monday morning,” and also asked them to come back on Tuesday morning.

He also invited any “sister Unions” to support them, and invited the general public who may want to support the “two day protest” to come and support – noting that everyone has to wear a mask.

In addition, Mr Furbert said, “All of the other areas that are essential services, as of Monday, the 30th of August, there will be a 21 day notice of industrial action issued for all those other areas that are essential services that are required by law to give a 21 day notice of industrial action.”

Mr Furbert added the BIU is willing to meet with the Government between now and Monday.

Update: The live broadcast has concluded and the 26-minute replay is below

Chris Furbert is so funny to watch and listen too, he is all over the place and not addressing the questions directly. He overlooks key questions. This is not the way to go right now Chris. Will you pay for those workers losing pay during this difficult time? I think the Union needs to become more modern, and deal with current ways to upgrade the union. Time for BIU to consider new leadership.

Sorry, Smartypants, but I don’t think Chris Furbert is overlooking anything. He cannot answer questions directly because this threat to Bermuda is not about workers rights, it is about a power struggle within the PLP. Our Premier has even acknowledged that.

The BIU needed new leadership 10 years ago. How many BIU related businesses, investments are doing well. The answer, who knows? At one point the books were 11 years behind? If the membership cant see an audited set of books so they know where their money is being invested, how it is being spent or where it has been lost, why would they continue to support him or her? Blind faith I guess. Oh well, they are no longer getting any more of my money. I’ve been sober now for 21 years.

  3. Ringmaster says:

If the BIU is doing a good job for its members, why would the members want to decertify? In the history of the BIU has there ever been a decertification situation, and if so what was the result?
