Minister Reminds Of Hurricane Preparedness

August 17, 2021

Minister of National Security Renee Ming is encouraging the public to “remain vigilant” during the ongoing hurricane season, with Tropical Storm Henri currently near the island and the Bermuda Weather Service issuing a Tropical Storm Watch.

A Government spokesperson said, “The Minister of National Security Renee Ming continues to encourage the public to remain vigilant during hurricane season. And with the presence of Tropical Storm Henri near the island, the Minister said this serves as a timely reminder to the public about ensuring their storm kits are stocked.

“The Bermuda Weather Service [BWS] advised as of 3.00 p.m. today, Bermuda remains under a Tropical Storm Watch and TS Henri is located approximately 115nm to the south, with maximum sustained winds of 50 knots.

“The centre of Henri is not expected to come near Bermuda. It’s forecast to remain well south of the island, tracking west over the next 36-48 hours, then northwest, as it strengthens to a moderate to strong tropical storm.

“However, winds locally could approach tropical storm force [34 knots] at times today and tonight, especially towards the south of the marine area.”

Minister Ming said, “The Bermuda Weather Service has been providing regular, daily updates on the projected path of TS Henri. While the expectation from the BWS is that we won’t be greatly or directly impacted by this weather system, the island can except to experience some sporadic periods of rain and some wind gusts.

“However I think this is a good occasion for the public to check to make sure they are prepared for any storm. This season is expected to be above average for hurricanes, and our community should really use this time to properly prepare.”

The Government spokesperson said, “Some hurricane readiness tips are as follows:

  • Prepare and repair your house for hurricane season.
  • Trim your trees back or any overhanging branches.
  • Carefully review your family plans and update them with any changes to phone numbers and other important information.
  • Take stock of all medical prescriptions that your family and pets require and ensure you have at least two weeks supply on hand.
  • Check your hurricane kit to make sure you have working flashlights, a portable radio with spare batteries and a stock of non-perishable food to last your family for seven days.
  • Ensure your home insurance policy is current.
  • Check with your vulnerable neighbours and ask them if they need any help with their preparations, keeping Covid-19 safety precautions in mind.
