EMO Continues To Monitor Hurricane Sam

The Emergency Measures Organisation [EMO] continues to closely monitor Hurricane Sam, with the category 4 storm expected to have its closest point of approach at 11pm tonight [Oct 1].

A Government spokesperson said, “As Hurricane Sam continues on its projected path, the Minister of National Security, Renee Ming once again encouraged vigilance from the public.

“The Minister notes that the Emergency Measures Organisation [EMO] continues to closely monitor the intense category 4 storm as it makes its approach near the island.

“Currently, a Tropical Strom Warning is in effect.

“And with a high degree of confidence in the current forecast the Bermuda Weather Service [BWS] notes that Hurricane Sam is tracking to the east of the island with its closest point of approach expected to be at 11.00 p.m. tonight.

“The BWS advised the following:

  • “Bermuda winds – possibly reaching tropical storm strength Friday night to early Saturday morning.
  • “No sustained winds to 50 knots, no winds to hurricane strength.
  • “Winds overnight – northerly 25-35 gusts 45 knots at exposed/elevated areas and in eastern marine area.
  • “Storm effects are mainly forecast to be a surge/wave event – waves offshore 20 feet Friday night through – Saturday morning – long swells continuing to build with dangerous surf on the south shore.

“As always, Minister Ming encouraged the public to stay storm ready, exercise safety, caution and common sense.
