BWS: Henri Is Threat, Watch Remains In Effect

[Updated] Tropical Storm Henri is a “threat to Bermuda” and a Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect, the Bermuda Weather Service said this morning [Aug 17], with its closest point of approach to Bermuda within 72 hours forecast to be 115 nm to the SSE at 8am today, with the BWS noting that “this system may move closer to Bermuda after this time period depending upon its track.”

The latest forecast from the U.S. National Hurricane Center said, “At 500 AM AST [0900 UTC], the center of Tropical Storm Henri was located near latitude 30.6 North, longitude 63.7 West. Henri is moving toward the west-southwest near 5 mph [7 km/h].

“A turn toward the west is forecast by tonight, and a slightly faster westward motion should continue through early Thursday. A turn to the west-northwest or northwest is expected by late Thursday. On the forecast track, the center of Henri should pass well to the south of Bermuda late today or tonight.

“Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 50 mph [85 km/h] with higher gusts. Some additional strengthening is possible during the next day or so.

“Henri remains a small tropical cyclone. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles [55 km] from the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1004 mb [29.65 inches],” the NHC said.

The BWS forecast states, “Tropical Storm Henri about 140 miles to our southeast will continue to take a clockwise track around the south of the Island over the next few days as it intensifies. Winds could approach tropical storm force at times, especially towards the south of the marine area, and as such a tropical storm watch remains in effect. Expect occasional spells of inclement weather mainly from later this afternoon into Wednesday.”

Update 12.18pm: The BWS said, “Closest point of approach to Bermuda within 72 hrs [3 days] is forecast to be 114 nm to the S, 4 pm Tue, Aug 17, 2021. However, this system may move closer to Bermuda after this time period depending upon its track.”
