Dr Reg Grundy Youth Photography Competition
The National Museum of Bermuda [NMB] and Joy Grundy are inviting students to participate in the Dr. Reg Grundy Annual Youth Photography Competition, which will be launching on Friday [Oct 1].
A spokesperson said, “The National Museum of Bermuda and Mrs. Joy Grundy welcomes all primary, middle and high school students to participate in The Dr. Reg Grundy Annual Youth Photography Competition: Your Eyes on Bermuda, launching on October 1, 2021.
“The competition, now in its third year, is an exciting opportunity for the next generation of photographers to demonstrate their appreciation for Bermuda’s natural and cultural environment in memory of Dr. Grundy.
“Open to all local photography enthusiasts aged 7-18, the competition asks local students to photograph a theme of interest: Bermuda Families, Bermuda Buildings or Bermuda Nature, and capture their chosen theme using a smart phone or digital camera.”
NMB Executive Director Elena Strong said, “The past year and a half has been challenging for us all, especially for students who have had to adapt to remote learning and pivot back and forth between classroom and home. They have shown incredible resilience and strength, and we hope that this competition provides an opportunity to be curious, connect with our natural and cultural heritage and have fun.”
The spokesperson said, “Dr. Reg Grundy, AC, OBE remains one of the key figures in the history of international television production and distribution and he is celebrated for being the pioneer of local television production on a global scale. Though Dr. Grundy’s life was dedicated to television, wildlife photography became his passionate avocation.
“As an Australian-Bermudian, he cherished his island home and was enchanted by the Bermuda Longtail for the last 35 years of his life. He spent long hours photographing Longtails on the cliffs of Astwood Park, from his boat in Castle Harbour or up at St. David’s Battery, with camera raised, peering out to sea. His enthusiasm for wildlife photography took him to every continent, searching for the ‘right shot’ with his wife, Joy [née Chambers], the well-known author, at his side.”
Mrs. Grundy said, “When people used to ask my husband how he got the perfect shot, he would say ‘the perfect shot is elusive. You just have to keep taking photos. Keep on shooting and learning more about your craft.’
“These words of Reg’s seem fitting for year three of our competition, and I would encourage all who participate to keep taking photos, to keep trying and to know that the more you work at it, the more you’ll develop your skill and the more you will fall in love with photography. Best of luck to all entrants this year.”
The spokesperson said, “Students must submit photos under the following age groups: 7-10, 11-14, and 15-18. Entries can be any/all themes [Bermuda Families, Bermuda Buildings or Bermuda Nature], but only one photograph per theme will be accepted. Shooting using a smart phone or digital camera, students should submit a minimum file size of 1MB with a maximum file size of 50 MB.
“The format should be JPEG online and the resolution a minimum of 300 DPI. In honouring Dr. Grundy’s signature style, all images should be submitted straight out of the camera, with no alterations using image editing software or digital enhancements.
“Winning entries will be displayed in Commissioner’s House at the Museum and published in MARITimes, NMB’s biannual magazine, as well as the on NMB and Reg Grundy Wildlife websites. Prizes include Iron Kids accounts at Clarien Bank, gift certificates at Phoenix Stores, and the Best in Show will win a Canon DSLR camera with lenses, a memory card, filters and a monopod. In addition to individual prizes, the school with the most submissions will receive a $1,500 gift certificate to AF Smith.
“The deadline for submissions for ages 7-10 is November 3; 11-14 is November 4; and 15-18 is November 5. Submissions must be made online. An award ceremony will be held on Thursday, December 9; details forthcoming.”
