Masterworks ‘Charman Art Detective’ Programme
The Masterworks Museum’s 10th Charman Prize opened to the public on October 11th, and visiting families with children ages 5-12 will be given a ‘Charman Art Detective’ worksheet, which upon completion, can be exchanged for a free art kit.
A spokesperson said, “The Masterworks Museum’s 10th Charman Prize opened to the public on October 11th. Since 2008, Masterworks has hosted the Charman Prize, a unique competition and exhibition for art inspired by Bermuda. The prize, sponsored by prominent international businessmen and avid Art Collector John Charman, gives local and resident artists a platform to showcase their talent.
“This fall, the Museum has launched several youth-centred programmes encouraging our local students to visit and engage in the exhibit; to truly experience our island’s visual culture. Thanks to the generosity of Mr. Charman, the Museum will be offering free Charman Art Kits, for visiting families with children ages 5-12.
“Upon their visit, kids are given a ‘Charman Art Detective’ worksheet, which upon completion, can be exchanged for a free art kit [one kit per family, while supplies last]. As an ‘Art Detective’, students are invited to create stories based on works in the show, sketch their favourite artwork, and try their hand at some trivia questions, while they explore the exhibition.
“Also on offer is the ‘Students’ Day at the Museum’ tour, for school groups to view the Charman Prize exhibition. Led by Education Director Kendra Earls, the student tours are designed for students from 5-18, with additional age-appropriate activities.
“The ‘Students’ Day at the Museum’ is an excellent opportunity for schools and other educational organisations to have their students experience the Charman Prize Exhibition. This guided engagement will see younger students become Junior Art Detectives – with a fun quiz worksheet, and simple drawing activities inspired by art on display, and for older students, engagement will focus more on cultivating conversation based on interpretation around the artwork,” said Kendra Earls.
“The ‘Charman Art Detective’ can be completed on any family visit [i.e. not a school group] to the Masterworks Museum. Art Kits may be redeemed one per family. If you would like to book a ‘Students’ Day at the Museum’, please contact Education Director, Kendra Earls, at education@masterworksbermuda.org or, call 299-4005. The Masterworks Museum is open from 10am-4pm Monday to Saturday.”
