Special Olympics First Polar Plunge On Dec 4

Special Olympics Bermuda announced that their first Polar Plunge will be held on December 4, 2021.

A spokesperson said, “The Polar Plunge is a registered trademark fundraising event for Special Olympics around the world and is increasing in popularity in the US and Canada, and hopefully here in Bermuda. Participants are encouraged to plunge in creative costume with prizes awarded for best costume in six individual and team categories.

“Special Olympics Bermuda [Registered Charity # 972], was formed with a mission to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition opportunities in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities providing the athletes with continuous opportunities to develop their physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympic athletes and the community.

“In 2019 Special Olympics Bermuda had the opportunity to travel to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates to participate in the 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games bringing home 19 medals!

“Past and new athletes have begun training for the anticipated quadrennial Special Olympics World Summer Games to be held in Berlin, Germany in 2023. Leading up to the Summer Games, athletes will engage in training, community engagement, social events and fundraising to ensure success in 2023.

Polar Plunge Bermuda November 2021

“The Polar Plunge was originally scheduled for April of this year and included a virtual aspect to mitigate the safety issues but was postponed due to the restrictions at the time. The new date coincides with week-long events being planned by numerous charities and entities to mark the International Day of Disabilities [3 December].

“The Polar Plunge will be held on Saturday, 4 December from 10 am to 12pm at Horseshoe Bay. Music will be provided by DJ King J.R. and to keep the Plungers ‘Coming in Hot’…or cold, Mr. Fotogenik will be the MC.

“Polar Plunge and Special Olympics Merchandise will also be on sale along with refreshments. A large Group exemption has been granted and all Covid-19 protocols will be followed. A valid Safekey is also required.”
