Audio | Senator Rev. Dr. EmilyGail Dill
“I am a true believer that as Bermudians, we can make it,” newly appointed Senator Rev. Dr. EmilyGail Dill said today [Feb 23] in the Senate.
She was appointed to the Senate on February 16th, and when speaking today she indicated that she would not say very much, she hoped it would not be counted as her “official maiden speech,” and explained that she just wanted to read a short poem that “raises an important and serious question for all of us.”
Senator Dill said, “Last week, which was my first day here in the Senate, there were questions that were raised in my mind given some of the tenor of the conversation. So I’d just like to share that poem here this morning and ask that we would reflect on it.”
The ‘Am I a Builder or a Wrecker’ poem by Edgar Guest that Senator Dill read states:
I watched them tearing a building down, a gang of men in a busy town. With a ho-heave-ho and lusty yell, they swung a beam and a sidewall fell.
I asked the foreman, “Are these men skilled, the men you’d hire if you had to build?” He gave me a laugh and said, “No indeed! Just common labour is all I need, I can easily wreck in a day or two, what builders have taken a year to do.”
And I thought to myself as I went my way, which of these two roles have I tried to play?
Am I a builder who works with care, measuring life by the rule and square? Am I shaping my deeds by a well-made plan, patiently doing the best I can? Or am I a wrecker who walks the town, content with the labour of tearing down?
“I am a true believer that as Bermudians, we can make it, we will bounce back,” she added.
After her appointment to the Senate, the PLP noted, “Senator Rev. Dr. Dill is an ordained Minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. She has worked in the Bermuda Public School System as a teacher, an Educational Therapist and as a Counselor. These skills sets will be of great value in her new role as the Junior Minister of National Security and Transport.”
The 3.5 minute audio of Senator Dill’s comments in the Senate today is below, and we apologize for the lack of custom graphic, it is due to a logistical issue, as the newly appointed Senator’s official image has not yet been released, once it is, we will upgrade the graphic for future audio extracts!
How, exactly, do her experiences as a teacher, an educational therapist, and a religious official, qualify her in any way to act as Junior Minister of National Security and Transport?
They don’t. Not at all.
But she can ask God for help, so there is that.
The PLP bench is so shallow.
Religion and politics should never be the main ingredients for a stable country regardless of size. To be successful the two mindsets have to be separated. One is a serious job requiring good skillsets and clever thinking and the other is a display of conjured stories and make believe truth. On second thoughts, maybe this currently fits Bermuda to a tee.
