Premier Leads Island Delegation At Consensus

June 9, 2022

Premier and Minister of Finance David Burt is leading the Bermuda delegation at Consensus 2022, being hosted by CoinDesk in Austin, Texas from today [June 9] to June 12.

A Government spokesperson said, “The Premier will be headlining CoinDesk’s Money Reimagine Summit, in a session entitled ‘BUIDL Island: Bermuda’s Digital Asset Strategy’ moderated by Sandro Ro, CEO of the Global Blockchain Business Council. The Premier will also join a live broadcast of CoinDesk TV’s Community Crypto.

“In addition to speaking engagements, the Premier will also hold meetings with business leaders who have expressed an interest in joining Bermuda’s Fintech industry.

“The Premier will be joined by representatives from the Bermuda Business Development Agency [BDA] and the Bermuda Monetary Authority [BMA] including CEO of the BDA David Hart; Senior Fintech Advisor for the BMA, Moad Fahmi; and Assistant Director of Fintech for the BMA, Aqsa Zubair.”

Premier Burt said, “Consensus 2022 signifies Bermuda’s Fintech journey coming full circle. In 2018, in my keynote speech at Consensus, I announced that the Government of Bermuda would table the Digital Assets and Business Act in the House of Assembly that same week.

“Since the introduction of this comprehensive regulatory framework, Bermuda’s Fintech industry has grown and is now made up of 15 digital asset companies fully licensed by the Bermuda Monetary Authority and 7 innovative insurers. In the last 6 months alone, the number of licensed digital asset companies has increased by 50%.

“Earlier today I did a media interview with RELM Insurance who is a BMA licensed innovative insurer who now have 13 employees based in Bermuda, up from just four a year ago. All 13 of their employees in Bermuda are Bermudian which demonstrates the opportunities that this industry is creating at home.

“The newest licensed company, Jewel Bank, was issued their full bank and digital assets business license this week and will provide essential banking services for digital asset companies. This will help to accelerate the development of Fintech in Bermuda as we continue to build momentum and attract more companies into our pipeline. This evening Jewel and the BDA are co-hosting a dinner with leaders in the digital asset space to drive even more business and jobs to Bermuda.

“Bermuda has established a respected reputation for strong and clear regulation and Consensus is an opportunity to share our story of leadership, to highlight our growing digital assets industry, and promote why Bermuda is the jurisdiction of choice for high-quality Fintech companies. I’m thrilled with the progress that we’ve made and hearing about the growth in jobs validates the Government’s strategy.”

So good to hear from the Premier that all this Fintech business will create jobs for Bermudians. I’m sure all those guys hanging out with nothing to do will be clamoring for the opportunities. All highly skilled too.

Get real. This will create less opportunities than AC17, and the PLP ridiculed that.

And peeps still listen to this BS. It’s all about themselves and not about the community, so sad!

Point of order. It was AC35 in 2017.

Burt and his entourage off on another trip, no doubt snapping up all the first class seats on the plane at our expense. Wonder who fills out and pays for the TAF’s for the emperor and his retinue?
