Bermuda’s team of athletes and officials received a warm welcome during a thrilling and theatrical opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games today.

More than 30,000 spectators inside a packed and proud Alexander Stadium, redeveloped especially for the “Friendly Games”, were treated to an all-singing and all-dancing extravaganza exploring Birmingham’s diverse history, culture and identity.

From impossibly energic performers in Peaky Blinders-style “Baker Boy” caps, a giant-sized puppet of Warwickshire’s favourite wordsmith, William Shakespeare, and an eye-catching recreation of the city’s past as an industrial superpower in the 18th century.

The three-hour spectacular even featured a gigantic, mechanical snorting bull, referencing the iconic Bullring shopping centre, and a brief skit from Lenny Henry, one of the region’s most-loved comedians.

The evening gave prominence to its prime purpose, the Parade of Nations, with Bermuda, led out by twin flag-bearers Emma Keane and Dage Minors, looking resplendent in their traditional uniform of navy blazers, pink shorts and knee-high socks.

Pop and rock anthems from some of the most celebrated bands from these parts, including UB40, Electric Light Orchestra and Dexys Midnight Runners, had fittingly formed the soundtrack to the larger-than-life show.

The best was yet to come, however, as Duran Duran, the city’s favourite musical sons, closed the curtain with a triumphant homecoming gig, working through their extensive back catalogue, including smash hits Save a Prayer and Ordinary World.

Bermuda’s team includes Dame Flora Duffy, Tyler Butterfield, Erica Hawley, Tyler Smith, Caitlin Conyers, Kaden Hopkins, Conor White, Nicholas Narraway, Emma Keane, Jah-Nhai Perinchief, Caitlyn Bobb, Dage Minors, Sakari Famous, Tiara DeRosa, Madelyn Moore, Jack Harvey, and Emma Harvey.
