Exhibition: “Bruce Stuart: The Place We Know”
The Masterworks Museum announced the opening of their next Rick Faries gallery exhibition ‘The Place We Know,’ a showing of works by Bruce Stuart from the Masterworks Permanent Collection.
A spokesperson said, “Focusing largely on the works made by the artist in the 80s-90s, this exhibit highlights The Place We Know, our island home, as captured meticulously by Stuart.
Artist Bruce Stuart shared the following from his home in Mexico:
First of all I would like to thank the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art for the honor of having my early works on exhibit and in the collection. A Big Thank you! to Mrs. Robinson who donated the collection and saw in my early paintings some promise which prompted her to collect me for 10 years. Everything is related to my Grandma Agnes’s backyard. The magic of it first inspired me to paint Bermuda as I remember it from my childhood days. It was rustic and my Grandma was a great lady who taught me many things.
Nobody would paint the derelict buildings, but pink cottages, flowers and pretty beach scenes for the tourist market. Being a young painter and looking at my home with different eyes, after returning from college, I wanted to paint the real Bermuda with flaking paint, cracks in the wall and a shark oil thermometer on the wall. The things that make us uniquely Bermudian. Back then I thought that I would paint like this forever! All that changed when I came to Mexico with Chesley Trott in 1996. I fell in love with San Miguel de Allende and started a soul search to find out what this small Point-buey is capable of. I went back and forth 20 times and found a freedom to create and submerge myself into the spirit of Art. In 2006 I moved there [with my wife Claudia] and have been exploring in various media ever since. Hopefully some of them will find Island homes.
My involvement with Masterworks Bermuda has been from the very beginning as an early Trustee and promoter. It was a catalyst for much of my Art education. I am very thankful for their tutelage and support. My heart has been behind them and is so proud of all they have accomplished in enriching and preserving our little Island’s history. What a Jewel Bermuda has always been and is! My hope is that these paintings take you back to that Place we know and Love, Bermuda! Always in my heart; enjoy the show!

“The Museum will host an opening reception this Friday, August 12th 5:30 pm and 7:00 pm and they invite members of the public to come out and view the show. The Place We Know exhibits through Tuesday, September 6th.”
