Dr Reg Grundy Youth Photography Competition
The National Museum of Bermuda [NMB] and Mrs. Joy Grundy welcomes all primary, middle and high school students to participate in The Dr. Reg Grundy Annual Youth Photography Competition: Your Eyes on Bermuda, launching on October 3, 2022.
A spokesperson said, “The competition, now in its fourth year, is an exciting opportunity for the next generation of photographers to demonstrate their appreciation for Bermuda’s natural and cultural environment in memory of Dr. Grundy.
“Open to all local photography enthusiasts aged 7-18, the competition asks local students to photograph a theme of interest: Bermuda Families, Bermuda Buildings or Bermuda Nature, and capture their chosen theme using a smart phone or digital camera.
“Dr. Reg Grundy, AC, OBE remains one of the key figures in the history of international television production and distribution and he is celebrated for being the pioneer of local television production on a global scale. Though Dr. Grundy’s life was dedicated to television, wildlife photography became his passionate avocation. As an Australian-Bermudian, he cherished his island home and was enchanted by the Bermuda Longtail for the last 35 years of his life. He spent long hours photographing Longtails on the cliffs of Astwood Park, from his boat in Castle Harbour or up at St. David’s Battery, with camera raised, peering out to sea. His enthusiasm for wildlife photography took him to every continent, searching for the ‘right shot’ with his wife, Joy [née Chambers], the well-known author, at his side.”
When asked about this year’s competition, Mrs. Joy Grundy said: “This is our 4th year of the photographic competition, and I am happy to say that we go from strength to strength. Every year I am pleasantly surprised at the beauty of Bermuda that our children uncover and if you have not yet received a prize, do what Dr. Grundy always said: ‘if at first you do not succeed, just keep on trying!’ Good luck to you all!”
The spokesperson said, “Students must submit photos under the following age groups: 7-10, 11-14, and 15-18. Entries can be any/all themes [Bermuda Families, Bermuda Buildings or Bermuda Nature], but only one photograph per theme will be accepted. Shooting using a smart phone or digital camera, students should submit a minimum file size of 1MB with a maximum file size of 50 MB. The format should be JPEG online and the resolution a minimum of 300 dpi. In honouring Dr. Grundy’s signature style, all images should be submitted straight out of the camera, with no alterations using image editing software or digital enhancements.
“This year’s judges are photographer Antoine Hunt, Dr. Deborah Atwood, NMB Curator, Chinni Mahadevan, Reg Grundy Photographic Libraries Curator, and Mrs. Joy Grundy.”
NMB Executive Director Elena Strong said: “Each year, the calibre of student photography submissions gets stronger and stronger, highlighting the creative talent we have on Island. Thank you to Mrs. Grundy, Clarien Bank, AF Smith, and Phoenix Stores for making the competition possible and allowing students to share their perspectives and build visual literacy skills. We look forward to seeing what the fourth year of the competition brings!”
The spokesperson said, “Winning entries will be displayed in Commissioner’s House at the Museum and published in MARITimes, NMB’s biannual magazine, as well as the on NMB and Reg Grundy Wildlife websites. Prizes include Iron Kids accounts at Clarien Bank, gift certificates at Phoenix Stores, and the ‘Best in Show’ will win a Canon DSLR camera with lenses, a memory card, filters and a carrying case. In addition to individual prizes, the school with the most submissions [based on percentage] will receive a $1,500 gift certificate to AF Smith.
“The deadline for submissions for ages 7-10 is November 2; 11-14 is November 3; 15-18 is November 4. Submissions must be made online only at www.nmb.bm/RG-photo-competition. An award ceremony will be held on Thursday, December 8, details forthcoming.”
