Rain washed out half of the week’s games but did not dampen the competition and enthusiasm exhibited by those teams fortunate enough to be able to play.
In B Division action, Team Smokey kept their undefeated record intact as they narrowly beat FIU-Scared Hitless 22 – 21. Marcus Johnson blasted a 3-run shot for FIU-Scared Hitless in the top of the 6th inning to give his side a 21 – 10 lead. Albert Acevado led the charge for Team Smokey as he belted a 3-run homer in the 1st inning and bested that effort with a grand-slam in the bottom of the 6th inning to pull within five runs. Pitcher, Dwayne Daniels, lost his control in the bottom of the 7th inning as he walked in the final four runs to hand Team Smokey the most improbable of victories. Acevado [3 for 4 – 2hr, 7rbi] and Quincy Jones [3 for 5 – 3rbi] were the top batters for Team Smokey while Kenrick Richardson [3 for 6 – 1hr, 5rbi] and Johnson [2 for 2 – 1hr, 3rbi] were terrific in a losing effort.
The Kings, after losing their first game by default, have now rattled off three straight victories to keep pace with Team Smokey. Hakuna Matata Lions were mauled by the Kings 22 – 4 in five innings. Leadoff batter, Les Dzwenka [4 for 4 – 1t, 1d, 5rbi], Al Busby [2 for 4 – 1d, 4rbi], John Rolph [3 for 4 – 1hr, 3rbi] and Tory Richard [2 for 4 – 2hr, 2rbi] did most of the damage for The Kings. Lions could only manage seven total team hits as their offense never got going. Scott Barnes [2 for 3 – 1rbi] and Shannon Rayner, Stephen Smith and Preston Mallory, with 1rbi each, offered the only resistance to a Kings team gunning for a showdown with Team Smokey.
In women’s action, Western Stars Angels outlasted Hardknockz 14 – 13. This was a tale of two halves as Angels did most of their damage in the 2nd and 3rd innings scoring five and six runs respectively. Hardknockz scored seven runs in the 5th inning, including a 3-run homer by Kyanne Scott, and four runs in the 6th inning with Scott driving in two of those runs. Nina Webb [3 for 4 – 3rbi], Terry Paynter [4 for 4 – 2rbi] and Rickelle Smith [3 for 3 – 2rbi] were the standouts for Angels while Scott [2 for 4 – 1hr, 5rbi] was Hardknockz’ best offensive player with Latreece Fray and Kiseante Grant contributing with 1rbi each.
In D Division action, Five O’s kept their unblemished record intact with a win over a very determined Oddballs squad 18 – 17. Scoring three runs in the top of the 5th inning, Oddballs lead 17 – 10. However, Five O’s replied with four runs in the bottom of the inning including a 2-run double by Khalid Pitcher. Oddballs were unable to score any additional runs while Five O’s chipped away scoring three runs in the 6th inning, including a solo shot by Jonathan Talbot, and their final five runs came in the bottom of the 7th inning with Chris Sabean singling in the tying and winning runs to seal the victory. Sabean [4 for 4 – 1t, 5rbi] and James Amarall [3 for 4 – 2rbi] lead Five O’s assault. Offensive standouts for Oddballs were Adam Fenos [2 for 5 – 1t, 3rbi] and Shaun Wonfor [3 for 4 – 3rbi].
